Default [REQ]: S-Boat with 16" gun turret

O.K. I know this sounds crazy, but is there any way to mount a 16" (or even a 6") triple gun turret on to an S-boat? It seems like the gun platform on the S-boat is big enough to hold at least a 6" turret without looking too rediculous.

I dont know the first thing about modding, but I love those old pig boats, and this ideas been in my head for weeks - like an itch I can't scratch! Just the idea of an S-boat with that much firepower makes me chuckle. Good times till you giv'r a broadside!

Anyways, could it be done? Can it be done? Any ideas?

I remember that it was done as a joke with some tug boats and an aircraft once.

Default battleship gun on sub

During WW1 the British took 12 inch guns (believed to have been from the old MAJESTIC class ships) and mounted one each on 4 'M' class (refitted K class) subs as a harbor defense monitor. The gun was loaded on the surface (no turntable but at a high angle elevation) then the boat was dived to about 12-20 feet leaving the muzzle and periscopes above water.
If an enemy ship entered the harbor, the sub would approach lining up a bead sight on the muzzle by periscope and fire while running shallow submerged from close range into the enemy ship.
M1 (ex K18) was launched 1918, launch dates of M2,3,4 not recorded and may have never been operational. Never used in battle, performance records and number of patrols unknown, practical worth a matter of conjecture.

details from Jane's fighting ships of WW1 1919

Default Further on the RN "M" Class

M1 was the only one to see war service. Was sunk 11/12/28 when the boat was rammed and sunk off of Dtart Point by the SS Vidar.

M1 became a seaplane carrier in 4/28 and then foundered in 1933

M3 became a minelayer in 1927 and then sold in 1932.

M4 was cancelled, and the ship launched to clear the slip in 1919.

50 shells were to be originally carried for the main gun. It could be reloaded underwater in 30 sec from a ready round or 20 sec surfaced. The admiralty views were decidedly mixed. The First Sea Lord seemed to think them to be needed, the Navy Board, not so much.

Info from Conway's All the Worlds Fighting Ships 1906-1921 pg. 92.

Yes, it can be done in the game.

Real life:

S-class submarine: 900 tons

16" triple turret: 2000 tons

@ Task Force - OMG that's the funniest thing I've seen in ages. Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the responses all. After reading them, and checking up on Bizfark, Whatthafark, and Catafark (still rollin'), I've got to narrow my post abit. First, after seeing the debacle... I mean, the Battle of New York, 16" is way too big. A 6" twin or triple turret... hmm, that's another matter. Seems like there was some interest in putting bigger guns on subs back then, so if anyone's already made an S-boat with a 6" double or triple gun turret, PM me please, or point me to it. I'd love to try it out. Otherwise:

1) How hard would this be for me to do myself (noobynoobnoob)? Surely it can't be as simple as hand editing one into the SubEquipParts.whatever file can it? If so, can someone please tell me exactly what to write and where?

2) (The Longshot) Are there any modders out there that that find this interesting & would like to give it a shot? Anyone want to mount a not too rediculous looking multiple gun turret on to an S-boat, make it a mod, and share it with the community? (me specifically)

Here's hoping. Thanks for your time.

Default Surcouff

I know I had an interest in the Surcouff and there seems to be some interest in from a Japanese fiction point of view. So who knows.

As for modding can't help there.

@ gimpy117: Ha, ha, yes a Submersifark is exactly what I'm looking for. Best name I could come up with is the SS Holy-S-Boat, Batman. Submersifark seems much more appropriate, lol.

I wonder about the recoil/speed impact on the sub. Would you be ahead 2/3, fire the gun and you suddenly come to a dead stop. Be kind of like hitting a sub net.

If you cruise at periscope depth, will just the gun be riding on top of the water?

100,000 tons in 10 minutes 9 seconds

Slightly Subnuclear Deck Gun at your service, sir! What do you want with a big heavy sixteen inch gun when your 3" Peashooter will do just fine? No 16" gun can do what this baby will do and works on a sugar-boat with a smile!
