Default it's an old question, but i forgot the answer...

Hi Hunters

...i'm chasing the screws and i can here them really clearly. but my soundman can not. there they are chopping away some where in the distance. i have got a good team in there but.."no sound contact..."

it does my head in !!!

so, please tell me oh knowledgable ones, why can i, but not my team, even when they have a good green bar.

and is there a way to rectify this? ( he asks - expecting the answer no! )

Your soundman will become more proficient with experience and the necessary qualification.

It is not uncommon to hear the sound of screws before they are detected by the game.

Have you tried selecting the report nearest sound contact button?

OHH yess! i've been bobbing around in these old coffins for a few years now. the thing that gets me is the sound is loud - not far away sound. and my man has good proficency. maybe in SH5 they will somehow be able to meld this anomaly into "if it is heard it IS heard."

he must be within the 20-30km range of hydrophones. the same has happend with a less experienced man too. anyway, i'll go ckeck on him now. maybe he was just a bit tired. i'll take him a coffee - perk him up a bit. cheers!

Diving deeper and shutting down all engines helps me hear targets much better. Do any of these things help the hydrophone man?

i have had success! and yes Commander Gizmo i do these things - have been doing these things all afternoon!
i've been in the Baltic: sept '39
i had to make my men work damned hard. we ran hard on the surface then dived to 20 meters shut down all noise and did the search, so when my man could not hear them i did. i told him - "go sleep it off meine junger!" and the old man did it himself.
i followed the screws for about 6 hours determined not to let them get away: i had no definite fix, just diving searching and running hard on surface.
eventually around sundown i got sight of three tubs plodding along - two tramps and a tug.
i was coming from behind which made it very difficult to check the flag, almost sure it would be a neutral, i ran in as far as i dared then dived at full speed ahead - they were at 5kts and i ran in along side at 7. saw that they were Danish and then dropped back and surfaced.

we all stood on deck and watched them fat little ducks paddle away into the sunset...
..oh well, thats how it goes. it was'nt wasted though. we all worked hard and found what we were looking for.

later that night we snook into Hel and sunk three V&W Destroyers, got caned by one but we were able to spin on him fast as he made his turn - he took it amid ships and sunk like molten steel into the dark.

but anyway, all this was about hydro's and my man not able to hear like me: well, he's been back for training, brassed him up with a few medals and now he's all smiles and ready to go. and this time the old man will not be holding his hand!

cheers

I remember reading along time ago that we could hear single ship screws out to about 25km and convoy screws out to about 30km, while the sound man was limited to about 20km. No fix that I recall.

What would happen if you just lowered the volume of the screw / prop soundfiles? Y'know, to make them blend into the background a bit more? Wouldn't affect the sonar guy one bit AFAIK, but you at least couldn't then hear the buggers before the crew either...
