Default Help! Game Now Crashing on Reloaded Saves

After a few weeks now of playing the v1.5 game error-free with TMO and RSRD mods loaded, my saves are now almost all getting corrupted. During a battle, I like to save at multiple points, and reloading any of these saves the following day now crashes the game back to windows.

What's weird is that I can save in the moment and then go reload. Things work fine. However, if I shut down my computer and reload the game, the saves no longer work.

I've tried a few things thus far...shutting down my Norton anti-virus...uninstalling and reinstalling the game. I bought the game through Steam, and this complicates things a bit. I tried looking for the "gu.exe" problem mentioned related to saves elsewhere, but I can't figure out how to change the load settings in Steam. It hides all this detail.

Any ideas?

If SH4 suffers the same problem as SH3, you should NEVER save a game when near ships. This will cause problems and bad saves. Just like you should never save when submerged.

Thanks. Weird that it worked fine before when saving close to ships, but now has stopped working.

I found this old thread...looks like someone else was having the same problem with the steam version.

Strange, I've just started having exactly the same problem today. I just assumed it was because I unloaded then loaded the mods through JSGME (to try to fix the CO2 bug which I hence succeeded in). I can't load up my out of port saves and now after restarting from last port save and spending a few weeks out on patrol loading the save eliminates the terrible weather there was, but also the merchant I was on my final approach towards.

Haven't been able to find any info about this anywhere else, so hopefully there's a fix.. I was about 8 submissions into my patrol when the savebug occured.

P.S. I'm -not- using the steam version and I am also using TMO 1.8b+RSRD, so that rules out that being the cause.

I know if you remove a mod and change the configuration... past saves will not load. Check and make sure you got everything in your mod list the exact same as when you created the save.

Only bad save I ever had was when contacts were present. I think its a 50/50 shot... some saves with contacts and submerged will work - but for unknown reasons others will not open (CTD). Some folks swear there is no save bug - others swear there is... mostly they just like to swear.

Once I started making all my saves - on the surface / all stop - I have not had a single "save" problem since.

Some simple steps to avoid this malody.

1.) Only apply mods while in base (between patrols)

2.) Save early save often. Dont play more than an hour or so without a save. I dont care if you are submerged at 300 feet with 10 destroyers overhead... make a save just in case.

No one really knows what the deal is with the saved game instability. Personally I have never had an issue. You will hear lots of 'dont save near other ships', 'dont save while submerged', 'only save while at the nav map', 'only save at 1x time compression'.

I have 'violated' all the above at one time or another and have had no issues to date with the exception of ai ships / planes being stuck in the side of a mountain / building.

I presume that if you save while surfaced at the nav map at 1x time your chances of some corrupted data are lessened. However it may be 'days' before you can get into such a position.

Hmm.. thought it may have been an issue with TMO/RSRD so I tried with RFB/RSRD. Worked for a day until I tried running it this afternoon without altering the files at all. Attempting to load a save just causes a CTD. Just reinstalled SH so hopefully that'll do the trick.
