Default Noob Question

Some of the noob guides are down, and I've attempted to search "promotion" "promotions" and "promoting" and while many people reference medal and rank I cant seem to figure out how to promote my crew.

I am playing SH3 with GWX 3.0 gold nothing else. I'm on my 13th patrol I just upgraded my U-boat to the 2500 renown one in the first flotilla (VIIB i think)

most of my sailors have 25/20 experience and a few of my petty officers have 161/150 they highlight blue when I first access the award menu, but the promotions are always 0 (zero). Any help would be appreciated.

You only get promotions for successful patrols and even then usually just one at a time (highly realistic....).

Use SHIII Commander to promote people who have reached their necessary experience points. i believe that is more realistic.

BTW Welcome aboard.

Close to 20 000 tons sinked earns one promotion, if at least one of your crew has required experience. Over 20 000 tons gives EK II (iron cross 2nd class) which gives something +80 experience and a promotion.

In a nut shell: more tonnage more promotions and medals.

I too recommend SH3 commander and realistic crew option.

SH3 awards 1 promotion for each 500 renown earned during a patrol.

SH3 awards 500 renown for reaching your patrol grid,
and 200 renown for remaining there 24 hours.
In both cases above GWX awards 0 renown.

That's 700 renown, per patrol, your crew isn't getting.

You may want to think about investing some of your renown on your crew.
You WILL need a good crew.

Welcome to the forum, Strand!

Go to your documments/SH3/Careers/your name/

and open the file Patrol_0.CFG with any text editor.

Scroll down to the end of the file, and in one of the last lines, you'll find something like "Promotions = 0"

Change the value "0" to any value you like. Load your game back and you'll have that amount of promotions to distribute.

If you want to manage your crew outside the game in a very cool and easy manner, I suggest you install SH3 Commander, which is an awesome software. Will allow you to modify the game into a much more realistic and enjoyable way, like randomizing ship tonnage and uboat crush depth.

WELCOME ABOARD!

You need to get SH3 Commander. It's an external tool that lets you adjust most of the game parameters, including promoting and awarding anyone you want, all you want. It also works with any mod or supermod, so there are no issues in that regard.

Wow, thank you for all the positive feedback. I am stunned at how awesome the community here is. I have been a fan of Sims for a long time, and I installed my SH3 after attempting to play Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, and having my heart broken. Codemasters really let down the PC fan base with a mere shell of what the Original Operation Flashpoint was. The community over at the CM forums is splintered and extremely negative and hostile at this moment. Very refreshing to read through threads for such an old Title (SH3) and see so many people still so happy with the experience. I'm also amazed at the level of commitment and dedication of the GWX team, releasing and supporting such a massive mod for free and out of respect for the game. I hope they all got good high pay jobs developing games somewhere. Big ups to all the other modders that keep this title alive. I'm sure all of this has been said over and over for many years but I still wanted to voice my gratitude to this community. Thanks again, and I look forward to visiting here more often.
