Default My sub destroyed by explosion of tanker?

Hi, new guy here :-) Nice to see an old face Tater here !

Am using Trigger Maru overhaul at realistic setting. I was having one of my best patrols ever, was Thresher (Tambor) out of Perth cruising the Makassar Strait picking off single tankers out of the refineries at Balik. Had put down about 5 tankers in rough seas, was down to my last load of fish and was in a raging thunderstorm, daytime with fog, and got a radar hit and took off after it. Went to general quarters to maximize eyes on deck and manned the deck gun with the best gunmen I had from the rear torp room. Did not get a sighting on the tanker as he went past at what must have been rock throwing range and I ended up in a stern chase. Finally the gun crew and lookouts sang out and a round went off. I looked thru the scope and the ship could not have been over 250 yrds away. All stop and took a narrow angle torpedo shot that obviously hit him under the arming range. Any farther than 250 yrds we lost sight of him. SO the 4.5 gun pounded away into his stern at the waterline for awhile, pulled up to his 7 Oclk spot at about 200 yrds, and there was an explosion and "He's going down".

I was head down in the office checking the course. Then there was a easily discernable secondary, tremendous fireworks, , and the damage alarms start screaming. I went to the crew menu, all the gun crew and lookouts were all dead. The hull was 100%, every crew member inside was red. Of course there ended my best game yet.

Did the exploding tanker take me out too? The was no chance of enemy warships around, and the target ( a modern tanker? stack aft) was dead and never fired a shot the entire engagement. It was total and instantaneous annihlation. I loved it

Thanks for the Mods, it makes SH4 SOOOO much better.

Yes, being close to an exploding tanker or any ship for that matter is not good for your crew or submarine.

Back in SH3 I once had an exploding merchant wipe me out - during the gunnery school!

No, I was just messing around and didn't think it would actually explode.

Those tankers and ammo carriers can take you OUT! Yes, you were a bit close there and paid the price.

Steve, I have a lit stick of dynamite I'd like you to hold. I am virtually certain it won't go off...

You should've been on the bridge. Nothing like actually seeing all that fire and metal as it comes flying right at you ... gives one a healthy respect for burning ships.

Don't feel bad Dgsbdy, I made the mistake of trying to slip away under a sinking freighter once

I've never done that one, but I've seen reports by more than one player who did.

Tried to slip under a CV once, it was listing heavily to port from three of my torpedos and as soon as I got under her she capsized and pinned me under the flight deck. A CV will sink much faster than you can dive believe me

I had a Maya heavy cruiser capsize and pin me to the bottom of Java Sea once....didnt kill me either, just severely damaged my boat.Someone really should create an "abandon ship" mod...where if in conditions where abandoning ship is possible, you can.If within so many miles of enemy force or land, you are a POW, if in area where rescue by friendlies is remotely possible, you get rescued or its 50/50, luck of the draw....anyone agree?

Legendary WW1 ace Lothar von Arnauld de la Periere reported torpedoing a merchant in one of his last actions, and trying to slip away under it. The ship sank at that moment, pinning the u-boat and taking it down. He said it was only luck that they broke free and lived to tell the story.
