Default About ready to give up

Greetings all!

I've been playing SHIII (SH Commander/GWX3.0) for several months now. I can advance no further than about mid 1941. Not that I am getting sunk (well, it has happened a couple of times)...the problem is the damn game always locks up on me. I get that cute little MS notice window that states "Silent Hunter has encountered a problem and...

It usually happens when I'm loading a saved game and I'm near a convoy and/or submerged. I've read in previous posts that this affects some players. Is there a fix in the works for this? I can't be stuck in a convoy battle for a couple of hours when I need to be getting sleep before work the next day.

Sorry for the mini-rant, but I'm pretty frustrated about this.

Cheers,
Scott

Has your doctor ever told you "Then don't do that!"?

You should only save your game surfaced with no flooding and away from any other ships.

Yes, Herr Docktor has told me that time and again

Just wish there was a way around that crash thing...seems silly that the game cannot be saved under such conditions.

Off to start a new career...I am a glutton for punishment

Cheers,
Scott

Always have a couple of earlier saved games in reserve.
It happens to us all sooner or later.

If it locks up only when you reach a certain date then I'm guessing there is something funny going on in the database. Did you include some 3rd party mods that replace/add ships?

No, I hadn't modded any ships or anything.

So, you mean after a crash a person could go back to an earlier save in the career....? Why didn't I think of that before

Scott

The strange thing is, that sometimes it is possible to save and load in port or even submerged. I have had this experience too.

Try to start the game without SH3 Commander, double click on sh3.exe and you will probably be able to load the last saved game.

If the above did not solve your problem, as said before load a previous saved game ... or as the GWX manual said: rename (or copy the folder) your Kaleun (career) for example Hans Balz to Hans Balzx (see the x).

My suggestion would be to save under a new file name each time rather than over writing your save. Each new mission my first save is titled 1, the second save is 2, you get the picture. That way if you get a bad save just go back to the previous one.

That's what I've been doing, always saving during the career under a different name each time. Usually I just name it for the quadrant I'm in, e.g., AM19 or AM19_01, etc...

I don't know why I didn't think of trying to load a previous save under the same career when the crashes happened....sigh...

I'll definitely try the tips you fellows have provided - many thanks!

Cheers,
Scott

I aggree and that's the accepted golden rule.
My very rare corrupted saves are completely random and after following the golden rule.
But I've not had a problem saving submerged or for that matter being in the middle of a convoy.
Maybe it's just luck.

I still have the previous save to fall back on though
