Default Should Subsim Open a Political Topics Forum?

Should subsim open a political topics forum so that the General Topics forum can be more dedicated to general topics and not political threads?

Nope.. sooner or later almost any controversial topic will be infused with politics.
No one is holding a gun to anyones head and forces him or her to peek inside and respond.

Furthermore it would crowd the Radioroom even more.

No, I think General Topics fits the bill nicely.

Creating a seperate subforum on the back of the last few weeks will only encourage that kind of posting.

People just have to have some self-restraint and see when the gig is up and that they are annoying the majority of the people who post here and have something interesting to post about.

Those that don't demonstrate self-restraint or are incapable of realising when they have stepped over the line will be warned and if they persist will be given an appropriate infraction.

As Neal said he has a light touch policy but that doesn't mean it can be abused.

No. "General topics" is already reserved for things not related to any of the other sim-related forums of this site. We could as well ask for a joke-sub-forum. A history sub-forum. And a sub-forum for curious cat's treads and the like (which I find to be the most idiotic of all threads running here). But I keep it simple. Instead of demanding a cat-subforum - I simply don't read those threads, and others as well if I am not interested in them by their headline.

If you specialise forums like that, what need is left to have a general topics forum then? GT already is for stuff not fitting into the site-/sim-/game-related forums.

As Xabba already said, people must think twice before posting, and make sure that the place gets not crowded with one and the same kind of threads. The recent wave of ideologic third person's chain-email threads were nothing else but spamming, and simply acchieved what they wanted: despite being closed, they brought their message over, closed or not. Such things should not be tolerated, but deleted. that is no censorship, but protection and enforcing of well-known board policies forbidding spamming.

I vote for a "Chain emails only" forum, or at minimun a thread. That would keep the **** out of sight and the more sensible political discussion still accessible.

In the mod section, one is encouraged to use something like [REL] in the topic title, when releasing a mod.
We could encourage the users to use [POL] in the title. That way, all users would know that this is a political discussion thread, and he/she can either choose to read it or avoid it.

So how about that? [POL] for topic titles instead of a new sub forum?

Already tried, 2 or 3 years ago. I marked some threads like that, but almost nobody cared to copy the idea.
