Default SH4 worth it?

Good evening all you happy submarine drivers. I have been snooping around on this forum for awhile but now i decided to actually register and post my first thread...cause i have a question to ask from you guys who know about these things soo much more than me.

I have been playing SH3 for couple of days and so far i like it very much. Now i am thinking about purchasing SH4 but certain sources tell me it is not worth it and that SH3 is so much better. Now i wan't to ask your opinions oh gurus of submarine simulators. I know SH4 was disapointment in it's original form but i am speaking about both games with addons installed. Is SH4 worth it with addons if i like SH3 or will i be happier with just concentrating on SH3?

Thank you in advance!

Depends on what you like really... SH4 is graphicly more beautiful but SH3/GWX has better game play and a better career IMO. It also depends on your preferences as to if you prefer US Fleet boats in the Pacific or German U-Boats in the Atlantic... I'd say give it try if you're interested.

Good luck and Welcome Aboard!

Out of the box it had it's issues, not unlike 3 for that matter. But patched and now modded it ( for both the PTO and ATO ) is an enjoyable sim in it's own right.

Do yourself a favor and check out some of the older and current threads in that forum as well, SH4.

@ Irish, you care to elaborate a little more, after all this is a new member. Thanks.

It's a Sub-Sim. Of course it's worth it!

See what it feels like to be on the winning side for a change!

I put SH4 on and then took it off, but then again i prefer the Atlantic and the odds against you game. If you like SH3 put on the GWX 3 it improves SH3 by at least a third more. Its a beautiful Mod.

Last but not least -- Welcome to our little home.

Thank you for all the nice replys.

I have gwx3 with SH3 already. I never even tried it without so i can't really say how it improves it cause i never saw the stock one. But i must say i like it so it must be good.

The reason i am asking about SH4 is that i am a poor student and don't have that much money to spend on games and i was thinking it's useless to buy it if i just play it couple of times before leaving it for SH3. It's not that pricey anymore i see but one gets lots of food with that money anyway.

Leave SH4 on the shelf.

In my opinion SH3 + GWX, or NYGM, or LSH3 or WAC is much more interesting because you're the 'underdog'

BTW, Welcome! Subsim.com is the right place to be.

I like both...as with most people here, I think, it depends on mood.

GWX is absolutely lovely. Gameplay and atmosphere are lovingly attended to, and you can't go wrong.

I do have a lot of interest in the fleet boats, though. Some of my coolest memories are from visiting a couple of them that are now museum ships. SH4 is the only thing that allows you to put 'em in action.

Completely different feel, though. In the Atlantic, you start out fairly confident, and, as the war goes on (and you know you'll lose anyway,) things get more desperate both tactically and strategically. I send out a max of 5 torpedoes and sink about 3 ships per convoy attack, typically. Then...wait for the storm of DC's, which only get closer and closer for each attack as the months scroll by.

In the Pacific, rampaging around in a Gato-class boat is much more optimistic. You know your side wins, and things get better for you as the war progresses. You've got 10 fish on call per attack, with reloads to spare. That's a lot more firepower than I've gotten used to in the Type VIIB.

Also, the Pacific is way bigger. Even at ~8000x compression it takes forever (on my slowish computer) for me to get to my patrol zone from Pearl.

Mind you, I just got SH4 running, haven't modded it yet, compared to SH3, which has been GWX/SH3 Commanderified.

First impression of SH4 is good...the weather is certainly nicer.
