Default Torpedo Deflection

So I just got started with SH3. Fun game - until torpedos come in, that is. Sometimes they hit, but about 90% of the time, they bounce right off the ship. I've tinkered with the settings before firing and nothing seems to work. I even disabled the "Dud torpedo" option. Even when the torpedo should clearly have exploded, it just moves aside like, "Sorry, Mr. Ship, I didn't mean to get in your ****ing way. Go right ahead. No really, I insist."

What do I do, or at the very least, why is this happening? It's frustrating.

Hello Spunky and welcome aboard! What your problem is called is Angle of Bow or AoB. You need to hit the ship at pretty much a 90 degree angle in order for the pistol of your torpedo to impact correctly and detonate. So you have to be perpendicular to your target and line up a 90 degree AoB shot...unless you use magnetic torpedo pistol which you must set at a deeper depth than the ships draft. I hope this helped!

I believe you can still have them detonate at an 85-90 angle.

Thanks for the replies. Even if the boat is lined up with the enemy ship at a perfect ninety degree angle, the torpedo somehow changes direction on route and gets deflected. How exactly can I fix this?

Look at Gyroangle value at periscope/Uzo view below your Notepad (or at gyroangle dial at TDC station): this is the degree value at which your torpedo will be deflected. At 0° the torpedo will run exactly ahead, at 30° the torpedo will make a 30° turn on the right, at 300° the torpedo will turn on the left for 60°, and so on..

I see, thanks. I'll pay attention to that next time. If I don't post back here, assume it helped and thanks in advance.
