Default Quick Mission - Battle Of Midway

I left the game for a long time but am back & determined to learn it. Before setting off on a career I thought I would go thru the quick missions first.

Battle Of Midway - what is the best way to approach this. Dive deep, rig for silent running and wait or try & out run. I've done both several times and have lost.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Well, I've just reloaded stock while trying to get TMO to work. I've played this a couple times. I've found:

At mission start you have a pre-selected course. I alter course about 20 degrees to starboard (more north-east), stay at periscope depth, ahead 2/3. This lets me slip in close, the screening destroyers don't seem to pick me up. I can unload all forward tubes and usually get 1 carrier (once I got a carrier and something else big).
Go ahead full and dive below the thermal layer, then slow to 2/3. Escorts get close but never seem to drop on me. I have time to reload, then come back up for another go.
The second time the escorts have a better fix. But they are all milling around playing dodge-boat with each other. Just for fun I have launched a torp into the mix to watch the scramble. Then I dive deep and sneak away.
Although once, when sneaking quietly away deep at 4x, with no contacts over me, I suddenly took major damage to the stern and quickly died...
After playing TMO for so long, it seemed too easy. My biggest problem is wanting to stay on external camera so much watching the battle.

Midway Tactics

Ok

Objective Sink the BB and the 3 CV's.

Ready all your tubes forward and set depths at 8 to 11 ft. Hi speed. Drop your rear tubes to Hi Speed and shallow depths say 4 5 ft. All detonaters on MAg Contact.....

Open allyour tubes as soon as you can, Run down to 9ft and edge slightly more north at Flank to intercept. Set tube one to Hi speed and shallow if a DD seems to be to curious. You can sink them with a shallow hit that lifts them and breaks their keels.

Cut up to periscope depth when close in and line up the first carrier, give it two tubes and then two tubes for the BB. Swing left and run to line up the remaining CV's. As soon as possible slam a rear tube onto the BB. It will likely sink if not give her a second.

Meanwhile watch for the CA's as they are good target for a depp set tube at 9 ft or so. Drop a few Countermeasures to confuse the DD's and change your direction north again. Use your rear tubes to reak havoc on the last CV. Notw it's fun time and simply line up on targets of oppertunity.

Remember there are two BB's in that remote flotilla approaching so if you shake the DD's go deep and reload for the battle with them.

Good luck
