I am playing Silent hunter 3 with the GWX 3.0 mod. Just started my first mission in 1939, and in the English channel sunk a merchant flying the British flag. The game said I sunk a neutral ship and I got negetive renown. Are merchants not fair game this early in the game?

GWX has you start at the beginning of August, a full month before the war actually began. This allows you to be on station when the war begins, as several u-boats were.

Welcome and Ahoy!

On your map there are 3 different colors:

Red = enemy.
Green = neutral.
Blue = allied.

You are able to see the cities and their colors on the navigation map. If red, then the Country (cities) and ships are your enemy.

War will begin 1 September 1939 with Poland, 3 September Great Britain will your enemy too!

Just don't do it again, lol. Reminds me of the time I came across a neutral Irish convoy. Didn't think about checking the flag until AFTER I sunk a pair of 11k ton large tankers.

Yup. Just hover your mouse over the clock in the bottom right of the screen.
