More frustrating than golf?

Hi all!

my first post so please forgive me if this has been raised hundreds of times already.
Is SH4 one of the best-looking and also most frustrating sims ever?
Just purchsed and have upgraded to 1.4.
Then installed RFB using JSGME (v2.2.0.2).
However, despite no warnings of any problems during the install, I'm still stuck in vanilla 1.4...
Uninstalled all then re-installed but still no joy.
Would really love to benefit from the hard work of the modders who created RFB.
Getting really sick of running out of fuel but with no working fuel-guage how am I supposed to figure out range?

I'm running Win XP sp3 on an AMD 5000+ with ATI X1950 Pro and 2Gb RAM.

Helllppppp....

Well, first off have you got the proper version of RFB?

Secondly did you install it correctly?

Did you install JSGME correctly?

You'll get more help if you're more specific about what problems you're having. I've never run into a group of people who know more about a game than this bunch.

& welcome aboard! Once you get the problem sorted out you're going to love the modders efforts, they rock.

Instead of figuring nautical miles per gallon, try using nautical miles per percent (%) if fuel.

Here is a link to a step by step how to install a mod. It uses TMO for a mod install and an old version at that, but just use RFB where you're told to use TMO.

It doesn't sound like you created a mods folder in your SHIV data folder.

Welcome to Subsim! Armistead has you up to speed on how to install a mod there.

But that won't solve your fuel problem. First, have confidence that you have plenty of fuel to go where you need to. You just need some fuel management skills there.

Your sub has wildly varying ranges depending on your throttle settings. It sounds like you are charging around at ahead full or ahead emergency. That will drain your tank just as well as a 5" shell in the fuel tank!

Perhaps you are charging around wide open and don't even realize it. How could such a thing happen? People playing the ostrich strategy love to hide all day submerged at slow speed and travel on the surface only at night. But I'll bet you didn't know that for all those battery charging hours your engines are running wide open to charge batteries, while your boat travels whatever speed you set it! There's that 5" hole in the fuel tanks again. Your submarine is a surface craft with the ability to submerge in an emergency or for stealthy attack. Not being attacked or not attacking? STAY ON THE SURFACE!!!

Your most economical speed is 9 knots. At any speed above or below that you will travel fewer miles per unit fuel burned. At 9 knots, ahead standard in most mods, you can easily return from Japan to Pearl on 30% fuel remaining. You can make Midway on a lot less than that.

Fuel management is initially frustrating, but it becomes so automatic that later you won't even think about it. You'll see posts like yours, scratch your head and say, "How could that possibly be a problem?"

Hope you stick with the game and get to that point soon!

Thanks to all for such quick (and helpful) responses!
Did another complete re-install/update, installed JSGME and lo-and-behold, everything is working as it should.
I think the problem was a snafu in setting up the file directories beneath the MODS folder which is now sorted.
This is one great sim, made even better with RFB.
Hey, it must be realistic - my first two torps prematured on the way to a Jap DD. I think I've annoyed them...
Fun, fun, fun.
Thanks again for the help and encouragement, best wishes to all.

In TMO there's a button that indicates the total range on a specific speed,2/3 makes your total travel distance about 12000nm.At standard the range is 15000nm so running at standard is the most economical, that's why they called it standard

To get to lets say Tokyo from Midway is about 2800nm so you need to figure out how much of your fuel is used up when you reach it.It's probably around 30% so you got 40% left to patrol on and you need 30% to get back..

Patrolling on 2/3 ahead on 40% fuel makes you go a long long way and as Robbins said off main importance is to submerge only when you have to,cause this will affect your patrol time and makes you less effective, eventually you will sink less ships cause you lost your situational awareness..from '44 some boats had a ballast tank that could be filled with fuel, and when the tank was spend it was flushed and used as #4 ballast tank..maybe this will be taken into account on any of the supermod updates..

Which leads me to a question too,is the weight of the spend torpedos deducted from the total making you run longer on 30% fuel?Still havent figured that out.

And welcome to subsim!
