wondered this also.

Was coming out of Lorient on 1x TC (which does my head in... lets not go there!) - nipped downstairs to wash the dishes whilst it took 20mins to exit the harbour and i popped back to see warnings of flooding in the bow. Thought it was aircraft perhaps but they would have to be suicidal to attack me that close to a port. Sure enough, i nipped to external cam and found about 1km back a type VIIC at an odd angle. Apparantly we were on a colision course

Let's just say that no beers were bought for the kaelen upon return to Lorient! And the W/O was made to waterski off the stern on his ass Bernard style as punishment.

This is because the ships are on a pre-detrmined patrol path, they are not trying to hit you (you never know....). You can easily avoid them by going around them.

Yeah..I actually like steering my boat out of the harbour. In Wilhelmshaven I like throttlin up and making that first hard left then a hard right then another left and zipping my way out into the bay while trying to avoid any ships at dock. Making that zig zag (left, right, left) can be a bit tricky when the pedal is to the medal

Was the ship you crashed into your escort that was attempting to show you the way through the sub-nets and mine fields (in GWX). If so you are suposed to follow it. It apears infront of you as you start your mission. At a set point it turns 180' and heads back to port.
Did you crash into it when it turned?

I believe the escorts appear just before you enter the harbour when you return from your patrol also.

It is why I sometime ruin a perfectly good career when Im skipping along @ 512X time compression after a long patrol.

If you decide to sail with the 29th Flotilla out of Salamis watch out for the S-boot that spawns once you've cleared the harbour and are in the bay. The pilot either sniffs gas or paint as he's all over the place & you will scrape hulls if you don't pay attention.
