Default Can you silence a ship's defensive fire ?

I seemed able to do it in stock, sometimes, but not in TMO.

Perhaps this is a job best left to the gunners?

But I like shooting the big gun - looking forward to getting a five-incher, oo-er missus.

I suppose you could knock out a merchant's guns if you were lucky. Might be easier to do with the smaller rapid-fire AA guns than the big one. However, in reality even the small possibility of taking a hole to the pressure hull and unnecessary crew causalities in return would dissuade most skippers. We do tend to like to things in the game that were unpracitical in real life due to the risk factor. A submarine was never built to be a gunboat and even with the mods the game is still too generous in regards to what poor gun platforms they actually were.

As for trying to silence an escort's guns...forget it.

A strategy that I've used is to stay in the gun's blind spot, especially if the merchant is dead in the water. A lot of merchants have only one big gun on the bow, so if you go directly astern their gun can't hit you.

stay out of its gunfireing range (~1500 Meters) ... your range is far above theirs!

Ok here's what I find in TMO with RSRD:

Automatic weapons max range is 3000yds.
Big guns max range is 6000yds.

Sometimes I'll check out a ship with the free camera to see if it's safe to surface close by to finish it off, but the last one I did this with suddenly spawned weapons the moment I popped up. Serves me right for using the free camera.

By the way thanks to whoever modded the gun training precision.

Maybe you came across an old-fashioned Q-ship.

I surfaced a gunned a little wooden patrol boat that looked like an open whaling boat from the days of yore with a pilot house. I can't recall what it is exactly without looking in game but with RFB & RSRDC as my mods I think it's the smallest patrol craft they have.

Anyway, it has a DC rack & two deck guns & I hit it probably a little over 100 times from 2k - 3k yards. Aside from the fact that it never sunk completely & was still motoring along; albeit slowly, the guys were still at their guns & pointing them my direction even though they would have needed scuba gear to engage

So I wouldn't bet money on being able to knock out the enemies defensive guns even if yours are vulnerable to a gull

You're not going to kill the gunners with TMO. You can get a direct hit under a gun with a torp and kill all those walking around, but you won't touch the gunners.
