Default Tipperary

I was searching for Tipperary from Das Boot, but I didnt find it. Russian Tipperary is quite similar, but they are singing russian. I found english too, but it is too slow I think. Do you know about any good version?
Thanks

In Das Boot they sing along to the original English version. So I have no idea what you mean by "too slow". Also, I'm surprised you found a Russian version, as I had no idea they made other language versions. I do know though that the Kriegsmarine banned the song being played anywhere on German Navy property as they felt it was too "English". Hence why it was "naughty" when they put the song on in Das Boot.

Oh ok, on Wikipedia it says the song was a British Army marching song used since the 1st World War. No wonder the Kriegsmarine banned it.

Ah, so that's why Der Alte took such delight in making 1WO put it on...and 1WO's reaction. I thought he was just reacting to the "Hitler Youth Leader" comment. Cool.

Not quite. In Das Boot, they're singing along to the version sung by the Red Russian Army Choir which is also on the movie soundtrack:

Here's the "Tipperary Scene" from Das Boot:

And of course, you gotta love the sign just outside of Tipperary:

I am currently looking at at least 3 different versions of the song.

1. by John McCormack (I find it the most pleasing to my ear).
2. by Bill Murray (not the comedian I presume) and the American Quartet
3. by Albert Farrington

plus there's the Russian Army version.

Which is not so strange when you consider it's a famous and very old song. It must have been redone a dozen times.
I have no idea where I found the songs though, probably downloaded them somewhere.

I though the same thing. Slowly things are becoming clear.

That's weird. I'm sure in the movie I have (Directors Cut) it is the original English version...I'm off to check.

edit: Yes it's the same...lol

To be honest, I find it very strange. It's a British army marching song...why would it interest the Russian Army? :rotfl:

I guess the Russian Army marches a lot. 'S a big country after all.

And the Red Army Choir is quite famous for their interpretations of various songs.

Because it's a cool song? I can't think of any other reason. It was written, recorded and popularized decades before any of us was born, and we still like it.

At least I do.

To be honest, I only like it because of Das Boot. Let's face it, if I go round with the Tipperary song blasting away on my car stereo, I'd probably get lynched...or laughed at. It's not exactly The Pussycat Dolls.

All together now..."It's a long way...to Tipperary..."
