Default Can Destroyers hear your rudder and dive planes move?

I'm just wondering if destroyers can hear your rudder and dive planes if you change course/depth while running silent. Basically what I want to know is if I should move my rudder sparingly or not at all when I'm not being depth charged?

I don't think it's actually a case of hearing your rudder etc. but more a case of the game engine simply 'hearing' your boat as an entity.

Always try to keep as narrow a profile as possible pointing at the escort and keep your rpm below 100.

destroyers have four modes of detection

1. visual - the DD crew observes your surfaced u-boat, or a part of your u-boat as it penetrates the surface

2. Radar - they detect your radar signals or your radar signature of your surfaced boat.

3. Passive Sonar - they hear your engines running / props turning or repair work being conducted / torpedoes being loaded (if not silent running) they dont hear anything else. (motors, dive planes, rudders etc)

4. Active Sonar - sound signal hits your boat and reflects a target... this depends heavily on your aspect ratio and depth

How do you keep your engine under a specific RPM? Usually I just go 1-2 knots at silent running. Is there a different way to set your RPM versus a speed?

next to the engine order telegraph dial on the user interface there is a little round button.

click the button and the telegraph dial turns into a knot meter indicating the current speed.

if you click somewhere between 1 and 2 knots, the speed of the engines will reduce to lower RPM. you can see your engine tachometers on the tach gauges directly over the planesmen in the command room view.

the needle should point to about 50 RPM

of course the trade off is that you are barely outrunning most garden snails... let alone hedge hogs and depth charges.

Well its obvious that they can hear your screws turning at a certain speed. Try crusin @ 2 knots infront of a DD with no reaction..then hit the throttle and watch the bad guys cr@p on you like a flock of seagulls at lunch time.

No, they can't hear your rudder and dive planes.
