GWX beginner/setup

got a new laptop, and have been playin SH4 for the past month, and im loving the hot tropic atmosphere of the pacificalong with the island girls it brings LOL jk , anyways, on a much more important scale, i've been wanting to switch back to SH3 and try out GWX and was wondering how do i get set up?, do i instal thevery first version, then install the newer ones? or do i simply install 3.1?

You are showing excellent judgment.
Make a clean install of SH3 and patch it to 1.4b. Even better, get a new DVD, already patched and starforce free, for only $9.99. and use that.
Then dl GWX 3.0 Gold and enjoy.
There are hundreds of mods (some of them rather good, if I don't say so myself)
This is not a dying game! Play it, and see if you can improve it!

Start with a clean install of SH3. Patch it to version 1.4b (unless your install version is already patched to 1.4b)

Donwload GWX 3.0 and install it. That's all there is to it!

LOL! Offtopic but Damn! Man! it would have been nice to have a CD that is starforce free. I bought my SH3 on ebay (EMEA) for 30$ when it came out. Unfortunately shipping was 20$ so it completely negated any gains I had on saving money. LOL! Anyways.... dang!!! Starforce is sooo annoying.

I have an older DVD version of SH3 and am now wondering what is starforce and why is it bad?

another speedbump when i try to update my Sh3 to 1.4b, it says, word for word here

this program cannot update the installed version of silent hunter III EMEA DVD v1.0 to v.1.3 because of the following reason:
C:\program files(x86)\ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Menu\de_me nu.txt:
unknown version

this is the same problem i had on my ancient IBM, how do i fix this? this sems to be the reason y ican't play GWX

When you uninstall your old copy of SH3, make sure you delete all of the folders it leaves behind. (including the one in your My Documents directory).

That will solve your problem.

It sounds like you have the same version as I do so the game is already patched to 1.4b (check the Menu screen - bottom right corner - should read 1.4). You should no longer need the dvd in the drive to play either.

Open the Device Manager, select "View-->Show Hidden Devices," then look under "Non Plug-and-play Drivers."

Oops, jumped to a conclusion. Did you download the appropriate patch for your region. There are european (EMEA)and american (US) patches. Or are you sure the DVD isn't allready verison 1.4? Locate the exe in the game folder, right click on it, choose properties, open the detail tab and it should show a version number.

Back to my original reply. Just as valid. ...

You seem to have Vista. Re-install the game (and maybe Sh3Commander aswel) outside of the Program Files folder as Vista requires administrator consent if those files and (sub-)folders are modified. You could run as administrator but you'll have to do that every time you change mods with JSGME aswel. Simplest is to reinstall somewhere else.

P.S. you seem to have a space in the filename of that link. But it doesn't seem to be in the text that I quoted here(when editing). Strange!
