I checked the RFB upgrade availability dates and they state that radar is supposed to be ready at mid '42. I recently ended my patrol in my home port (Brisbane) in my sargo class submarine and there still was no radar available for me. The list of upgrades is completely empty.
I even tried transfering to another base, only Fremantle was choosable there. But there they also don't have one of these devices. Any info on this ? Forum search gave nothing new to me, only that the first radar types are available from mid '42 on. Thanks, i. |

Oh, I see you've met RFB's infamous blind chimpanzee. You see every time you return from a cruise, the game makes you eligible for some upgrades, according to the time sheet you are blandishing there.
But you've reckoned without our buddy, the blind chimp there. You see there is a cork board with all the possible options on it. RFB takes our blind chimpanzee, puts a dart in his hand, sits him in a barber chair and spins him around six times really quickly. Then the chimp tosses his dart. If it hits the card with the radar on it, why then it's your luck day. Give the chimp a banana. If he misses, tough toenails. If you're not nice to the chimp he could miss until May of 1945! ![]()

The manual states nothing like this
![]() ![]() So I guess it is better to wait for a newer boat that has radar already installed |

I'm guessing this might be part of RFB 2.0 that RFB is working on. Therefore not in the manual.

Actually it's built into the stock game and affects all mods. It's been written about on Subsim extensively by different modders when people have complained that they aren't getting their upgrades on "schedule."
There is no schedule until the blind chimpanzee says so!

Yeah, the worst part of it is that they suck, but you have to be nice to them. Otherwise they just drop the dart!

Does being nice mean saving before hitting the 'end patrol' button and reloading it the chimp dumped it in the wall ?

Historically, the first Sargo class boat to receive SD radar was the Sturgeon in March 1942, while the first SJ-equipped Sargo was the Stingray, in October of 1942. This will all be simulated better in RFB 2.0.

Just got a new boat, Gato class (the USS Gato actually
![]() The patrol ended Dec 30th '42 and the next one started on Jan 20th '43. I'll have to wait a little longer, I guess. But I'm curious what will happen sooner, me getting a radar in RFB 1.52 or RFB 2 being released ![]() |

Finally bribed the monkey to not be so stubborn.
I brought him a whole bunch of bananas from the Phillis (are there bananas?). He was so happy, he immediately hit *all* the open spots on the board. Now I have the full radar package as far as available in mid Feb. '43. Also a nicer deck gun and better hydrophones. I guess I'm going to bring him more of that stuff the next time I'm around my home base ![]() |
