Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific, U-Boat Missions (un-modded)
I'm still trying to upgrade from my old Geforce 5500. The card I have now, Nvidia GeForce 7800 GS, is on the recommended list but it is crashing at the same place the 6200 I tried was crashing. I get through the menu's ok but when the Command Room starts coming into view, the system crashes and I have to reboot. I'm thinking it's a setting issue but so far have not been able to solve the problem. Searching forums I have so far found only one mention of a Geforce 7800 / Silent Hunter 4 crashing thread. Turns out this guys trouble was bad main memory and not a card/game problem (tested my memory, found OK). My old card never crashed the system but, needless to say, lacked a great deal in performance. The 7800 I am trying is used but aside from SH4, seems to be working ok. The questions I have now are: why would the system always crash at the Command Room view and is the problem a setting issue? If it's a setting issue which settings need to be changed? Does anyone have any experience with the GeForce 7800? Hope someone has some insite for me. Lost at sea ![]() Tony 3 gig Ram AMD Athlon 1.7 gig but supposed to be running at 2.1 |

I doubt it's an issue with your video card. The 7800 should do a good job. It's more likely something wrong with your SH4 profile or a mod-associated problem. Are you using any mods? Have you tried a new career? A couple more tid-bits of info and you'll likely be running much happier than you were with the 5500!!!
For now--just let the video card handle settings. Don't try to force AA or anything for the moment as that may actually take more time to straighten out your problem. And I'd recommend nvidia's most recent driver as well http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_185.85_whql.html. These are XP drivers--Vista is different but same home page. Hang in there!!!

I'm using the Geforce 7800 GS (AGP) (no settings changed at all), 2Gig RAM but with an AMD 64 3700+ (2.4Ghz). The game runs pretty damn smooth. Perhaps a conflict with processor type vs card?
Was the game running with the 5500? |

After much effort, I have found the answer to the trouble I was having getting the Geforce 7800 card to work without crashing the game. I reloaded the default driver settings for the card and instead of backing off the graphic settings, I maxed them out. Game works like a charm! Beautiful! I had hopes that the trouble was a setting issue and not a hardware problem I just didn't think it would be that the game settings would be too low. Everything works so much faster and the ocean looks fantastic. Can't wait to catch a nice clear sun rise. Or for that matter a storm. Thanks to all those who helped me with this.

Glad you got it sorted out! I had similar experiences with the 7900GT I had--it worked better when it was working harder!
Happy Sailing and Enjoy the View! ![]()
