Default Second Career

Tom retired in his early 50's and started a second career. However, even though he loved his new job, he just couldn't seem to get to work on time. Every day, he was 5, 10, 15 minutes late.

But he was a good worker and really sharp, so his boss was in a quandary about how to deal with it. Finally, one day, his boss called him into the office for a talk.

"Tom, I must tell you, I truly like your work ethic, you do a bang-up job, but being late for work nearly every day is quite annoying to me as well as your fellow workers."

Tom replied, "Yes, sir, I know. I'm sorry, but I am working on it."

"That's what I like to hear," his boss said. "However, the fact that you consistently come to work late does puzzle me, because I understand that you retired from the United States Air Force, and they have some pretty rigid rules about tardiness. Isn't that correct?"

"Yes. I did retire from the Air Force, and I'm mighty proud of it!" said Tom.

"Well, what did they say when you came in late?" asked his boss.

"They said, 'Good morning, General'."

My version was the US Navy and "Good morning Admiral"

Son takes his father to the doctor. The doctor gives them the bad news that the father is dying of cancer. Father tells the son that he has had a good long life and wants to stop at the boozer on the way home to celebrate it.
While at the pub, the father sees several of his friends. He tells them that he is dying of AIDS.
When the friends leave the son asks, "Dad, you are dying of cancer. Why did you tell them that you are dying of AIDS?"
The father replies, "I don't want them screwing your mother after I'm gone!"

True story.

Just after WWII my mom was still working at Lockheed and so she started me early in the first grade, you could do that then. For some reason I went to a different school then brothers so I had to walk alone to school.
Problem was I had to pass two real distractions. First the Walt Disney Studios and the second was an aircraft salvage yard with lots of WWII fighter planes.
If I wasn't trying to sneak in to see Mickey Mouse (I did actually get to meet Walt on one of my adventures) or I was flying fighters, you could just go under the fence and get into the cockpits. It was too cool!!!! I loved planes at a very early age. The point is I was always late for school, everyday. They sent me to the principals office and he asked what would happen if my father was always late for work. Dad was a Lockheed design engineering group supervisor and I knew this, so I said everybody would say "good morning boss and get back to work". Not a bad answer for a 5 1/2 year old. My parents were told I was not ready for school and I was not let back in.
It's amazing how vividly you can remember something that happened so long ago but I can still see it as if it were yesterday.
