Default Deciphering the Manual

I recently purchased SH4 Gold. I've printed out the manual that comes with the install CD. I'm not an intellect, but neither am I dumb. I can not make a correct hit on any ship no matter what range I am at. Being that I am a new submariner, I have been always positioning my sub at a 90 degree angle to the target. I have sent the fish at the bow hoping to hit amid ship or near the stern. I have also led the fish as I would when I am hunting game in the mountains. My range variations have been somewhere between 1500 and 500. Discouraging to say the least. The instructions tell me that once I find the target with the cross hairs on the scope, check the identity manual and select the red check mark, everything is done automatically. When firing the torpedo, my speed is slow forward to keep a steady angle on the bow of the target. What is it that I am doing wrong or do not understand.

I find it easier to drop a deer at a full gallop than a ship that is almost dead in the water. I had to finish of one freighter with the cannon, and because I was too close, particles from the explosion destroy my sub. I am more dangerous than the enemy.

I'd appreciate any help, advice, jokes or laughs. Much obliged.
