Selecting appropriate underwater speed when near or under a convoy

I have had this thought for a while now,and it has me curious.Say if I wanted to maintain close contact with a convoy,by being very close to it naturally,or even under it,would the convoy detect me if my engine speed was set at their speed?.I imagine the convoy would hear me among their own noise if my engines were running higher than theirs. They would detect a sound anomaly?.

As 1942 is closing to an end in my campaign and their underwater listening capability has increased since my last patrol being too close to a convoy would seem suicidal,yet...it would give you a tactical advantage as under it you are already within the screen, and so an attack could be made easier and more frequently, instead of having to evade, set up new attack run, intercept, then engage.Theoretically it could allow attacks on the convoy every 2 hours or so,or when they have finished their zig zagging after an attack, and return to course.

Cheers for any info on this matter
