Default Career and different sub types?

I have always run a carreer with either a type VII or type IX. I don't know why I never thought to ask this before, but...can I swap, back and forth, between a type VII or IX (or even a XXI when available) during the same career? IOW, run one patrol in a VII and then switch to a IX for the next and...importantly...switch back to a VII without having to spend the renown, again, on the VII?

While I'm asking...does the choice of model make any difference to your "assigned" patrol area?

Thanks!

I think in order to do this you'll have switch flotillas every patrol as certain types were assigned to certain flotillas. Flotilla transfers are kinda iffy. Plus, it will certainly cost renown to go back and forth. I don't think the game reserves your old boat or a similar model available for free.

Choice of model does make a big difference as to where you are assigned to patrol. Type IXs are usually given the missions in distant waters like the South Atlantic and Caribbean.

The 2nd flotilla has both VII's and IX's, but having to "buy back" a previously owned sub would make it very costly, indeed.

Thanks!
