Default Stock SH4 - Are there IJN Subs to sink?

I am new to this forum and to playing SH4. I am have for the most part completed training and I am just now in my first patrol of my first campaign in the stock game. I am running high realism... manual TDC and I am finally getting the hang of it and sinking ships (when the torpedoes work that is!)

Now to my question.... Back in SH1 you would encounter IJN subs and do battle with them. In the recognition manuals, I don't see that there are any IJN subs and yet there were many duals between US and IJN subs during the war. Are there IJN Subs in the stock game or can they be added on? I tried to search this forum but didn't find this topic so sorry if this is a repeat.

Thanks!

Welcome Bull,

There are none in the stock game. I hear there are in some MODs, but I haven't played the big MODs.
There are 2 Japanese subs, Sen Toku and the Minisub in stock but neither one does anything, they won't move and you can't sink them. But the Sen Toku has been Modded to be AI and can be added if you know how. If you don't then ask.

Also when asking a question you should specify whether you are SH4 1.4 or 1.5. It make a difference on some ships whether they will work or not. If you don't know, 1.5 is the Uboat add on but it also updates SH4 to version 1.5.

Thanks Peabody.

I am running v1.4. I will have to look into adding v1.5 uboats - does that replace the need for me to get SH3 that I don't have either? I used to run SH2 but then my computer got old and there were other priorities.

Thanks again!

You dont' need SH3 to run the SH4 U-Boat expansion. It's a SH4 add-on that gives you the ability to command a U-Boat based in the Far East as well as updating SH4 to 1.5.

I remember the IJN subs in SH1. Although they could move about on their own power they weren't much more than a different breed of surface ship. I don't recall them ever submerging when attacked, or initiating a torpedo attack of their own. Hopefully we'll see something like that in the future.

Actually the IJN subs in SH1 DID fire torpedoes at you if you remained on the surface long enough after encountering them.
