Default How much does it take?

Hello all,

Thought I'd do some harbour raiding, so sneaked into Gibralter (Christmas 1940) and came across HMS Nelson at anchor. Slammed my last 4 torps into her all across her hull (and although she's sitting a bit lower in the water now), she shows no sign of demise. So what does it take?

Thanks
Paul

Well...you're out of torpedoes. You surface to try the deck guns and even assuming they can penetrate her hide the whole harbour will open fire on you if they're not searching for you already. I guess you go home and hope Nelson is out of commission for a while.

There's alot of sudden activity, but so far so good. Sitting silent and still, hoping she'll go down eventually.

I reloaded to situation, and positioned myself on the opposite side. A 'destroyer' is on hunt. Expecting he'll head out for the open sea, before IK surface quietly for some deck gun action at point blank range.

Is it possible since its near shore, that the harbor is only 12' deep there and the ship is resting on the bottom?

yes this is possible.

in which case you have to take away all the ships "hit points"

ships in SH3 "sink" by two ways - either by flooding or by being totally destroyed.

she is sufficiently flooded enough to sink, but is probably resting on the bottom and will sink no more.

your only option now is to destroy her with more torpedoes os some other means.

Sinking battleships in harbours is often tricky.. because they just lie on the seafloor without sink.. If you have other torpedoes, try to aim a gun turret, set torpedo depth to 2-3 meters. In this way you get the probability to hit the Santa Barbara (ammonitions deposit) and blow up the ship!

I dont know what this is like in GWX 3, but in earlier GWX versions I found that a torpedo directly under the smoke stack did the trick. This was with Impact detonation, at 1/2 of her keel depth. I got secondary explosions every time, maybe because the water hitting the boilers is not a good combo. I would always aim for the ammo compartments too. Didnt get much success there, but you never know.

It's a shame there's no renown for damaging ships. A big ship settling down on the bottom of a port is pretty realistic, but fixing it up was a major and expensive operation. I guess it would be out of comission for at least 6 months and it's possible it wouldn't be fixed before the war ended, not to mention it would be an easy target for the Luftwaffe.

1/2 renown for damage would be a nice mod if it can be done.

If it could it probably would've been done by now.

You can always edit the Patrol file to add renown that you think you deserve.
