Default Adapting authentic tactics

I've been wondering, have people here tried adapting authentic tactics used by submariners in WWII into the game and used them? I ask because I've been reading "US Submarine Operations in WWII" by Theodore Roscoe, and tried applying some of the tactics that I read about. I'm still playing in 1941, so no radar (or competent ASW on the part of the IJN DDs), and about the only tactic I've tried successfully thus far is the end-around, on a passenger liner. But I was wondering about other tactics like the day-periscope attack, night-surface attacks, and so on.
