Default Bearing Plotter

Is there a way to remove the bearing plotter with the 360' degree wheel in Silent Hunter IV? I want to REALLY navigate like a real sailor and the plotting wheel gives away my position and real submariners did not have it on the actual navigation charts. How do I remove it?
I don't mean the compass in the dials.

I'm a little puzzled here. Not only did the real submarine have bearing plotter, compass, divider and protractor but they had numerous tools and charts besides, which we don't have in the game. That being said, I'm sure there's a simple way to remove it from the game. Anyone?

I meant that thing on the navigation maps of Silent Hunter with your submarine in the center that always follows your sub around and provides GPS like navigation always tells where you are on the map.
That thing that provides a GPS style precision navigation that wasn't available in World War II.

Patchman, do you mean this?

If so, that's the 3000 yard/meter bearing plotter, not the 1500 yard bearing plotter in the stock game. It does nothing to show where your sub is, it only projects a bearing plotter around the sub so you can plot the bearing of sighted objects, or your projected torpedo path. It says nothing about where you are to GPS certainty at all. Taking it away will not solve the problem of how accurately targets are plotted.

You can get rid of the velocity vectors, ship silhouettes, friend/foe/neutral colors, text ID, course and speed with TMO or TMOplot. Then all you are left with to object to is the perfect positioning of visual targets. If you have radar, that objection is gone because you would know those positions as accurately as our nav map shows them anyway.

So I understand what you want, but getting rid of the bearing plotter has nothing to do with it. Repainting the head would help just as much.

Yes, I mean that thing. What is that thing?

Patchman, it's the 3000 yard/meter bearing plotter, twice as large as the one in the stock game. It is centered on the sub, so since it follows the sub around, has nothing to do with telling you the exact geographical position of the sub. It's function is only to measure positions of targets relative to the sub.

It does not measure relative to the target or the sub's position on the earth. That is what a GPS does. So the bearing plotter doesn't do anything a GPS would do. That's why your original post is confusing. Knowing a target bears 282º at 2350 yards tells you nothing about where you are! And so long as you have radar there's nothing unrealistic in having that information.

Great explanation RR, but if a guy wants to cut off his nose to spite himself here's the sharp knife.

This bearing tool is not a stock item so first remove the mod your using through JSGME (that means take it out of the stock game). Put the mod back over in the left hand panel of JSGME. Go to the Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific folder, drill down into the "Mods" folder and find the mod you just deactivated.

If you use the Porpoise class sub (or chose any sub your using; and/or do this to all subs). Go into the Data\Submarine\NSS_Porpoise\NSS_Porpoise_ship.dds and rename the file "NSS_Porpoise_ship.dds" to anything you like, such as "Remove_NSS_Porpoise_ship.dds". I suggest you simply rename the file instead of removing it (you may want it back later). Poof, the subs bearing plotter is gone. Again, do this for all subs so it won't show up when you change subs. This will put you back into what the Stock game provides, simply a sub silhouette. If you don't like the sub silhouette, meaning you don't want your sub to be portrayed on the Nav map at all, there's a way to remove that as well. Using a blank (or dummy) .dds image. If this is getting over your head I suggest you start learning to mod or accept the game for what it is.

It's not unrealistic, but they would usually manually apply the bearing tool rather than have it be automatically on the map. I remember Silent Hunter III having such a tool.

Alright- here's a stupid question: I have the normal game, upgraded to 1.4, and I don't have the bearing plotter. So how should I get it? Would I get it if I had the U-Boot missions?

Marinesco, the one I use is the 3000 yard/meter bearing plotter. It changes to appropriate units depending on whether you are in the U-Boat or fleet boat.

Ok so what is the proper way to install mods(I downloaded it already)? I don't want to screw everything up and have to install the game plus U-boat missions all over again.

mods are installed with the JSGME tool

it stands for jonesosft generic mod enabler

get it here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=123908

install by placing the exe file into your programs files "ubisoft / Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific" folder then click on it, thats it and you can remove the exe file afterwards or delete it or leave it there but jsgme doesnt need it so your finished with it.
