What is that herringbone pattern to the right?

Actually there are two herringbone patterns. On to the left and heading in a different direction. In fact there are 4 and they all point towards each other.

That looks like it came from The Xfiles... I forgot the exact name of the episode, but there's one where a chemical agent breaks out on board a submarine and causes the crew to surface through a huge snow-covered ice sheet...

I think the first movie has a scene with a sub like that. Which then starts to submerge while Mulder tries to get onboard and the tower's plane almost cuts his in half.

EDIT: Ow wait, I think it was one of the episodes..

Ice sheets and extreme latitudes'll do that to you. The sun might have been very, very low on the horizon, and the complete lack of obstacle to create shadows, coupled with the reflections from the snow / ice.
