Quite a lousy view of the world on the last mission of your life, even if you miss, you are still dead. The fate of Kaiten pilots that failed to hit was not death by explosion, but instead death by implosion, or worse, crushed inside the "hull" of the kaiten, as the thing sank into the depths.
Pretty disgusting that a government could drive its kids to do such really. |

They attacked Perl Harbour to give some advance in hope with a quick territory conquest on Pacific would give them enough resources to face/balance US in equal terms. But that back fired... Japan lack on resources even with new empire territories expansion at time (because had to transport); while US as a country had almost everything that needed to sustain production and replace while fighting two fronts... "lucky" far from two fronts as well. resources was one of the factors... US had it concentrated... Japan had it disperced so needed to be transported from its vast territory expansion... (who builds fast deploys/replaces fast win's war) For a little country without resources Japan made hell on Earth and also suffered the most on WWII. But above all was the mentality a major player where even in our days; honour and respect still is something highly regarded and not seen on any other nation (but losing it gradually).

They were expecting total annihilation of their cities; rape, torture, castration. Inflicting so much damage that the Allies would shift from their "unconditional surrender" stance and a mediated peace through the Russians were their last hopes.
I mentioned before the 14 year old girls being trained with naginata (a spear). They were going to hurl themselves at the invasion beaches in wave attacks-better that than rape and mutilation, which was what they were indoctrinated to expect. From the start of the war, mothers told their sons "Don't let me be the only mother on the street without a son in Yasakuni"-the shrine for war dead in Tokyo. Servicemen had the mindset that they were already dead, so signing up for Tokko operations in this atmosphere doesn't seem so strange. If you thought your death could save your family, what would you do?
