So far, so good. After not playing any Sub Sims for years, I discovered SHIV quite by accident. I have been playing for about a week and I am having a ball. Casual mode for now, but I am already seeing the need for more realism. This will be a long term project so I will take it slowly. This sim represents a quantum leap realism, even in casual mode. There is a ton to learn. Having access to this group in invaluable. To the guys who may be having problems, watch the tutorials and don’t get discouraged.

I have had a life long fascination with Submarines in general and WWII boats in particular. On a vacation to Southern California years ago, I insisted on a detour to San Fran so I could tour of the USS Pampanito on display in San Francisco. A vacation to Hawaii was specifically geared to Pearl Harbor tours, I had to go back twice. The one over riding thought I had after touring two WWII subs is the thought of that many guys crowded together in such a small space for three months at a time, trrying to fight a war and survive. Being 6’3, life on a Sub would be a challenge for me.

About fifteen years ago I was playing a Sub Sim game, don’t remember which one but I brought the manual to work one day. At that time, I worked with a guy who was in the Navy during WWII and worked on a Submarine refit crew. He was looking through the book and told me a number of stories about the work he did and the experiences he had. When he got to the chapter on the TDC, he flat denied that WWII subs had such a thing. He insisted that the one in the game manual had to be something that the game authors added. This was before the Internet so I had to prove to him that TDC’s really existed. Since the TDC was top secret, he either didn’t have the necessary clearance to be around when they were installed back then or he didn’t spend much time in the control room. He was a great guy who is now on “eternal patrol.”

Anyway, the sim is great and I am amazed at the number of people playing. Hopefully, I won’t ask too many stupid questions.
