Horseshoes and Handgrenades..!?
Kaluens,
I have been playing SH3 and all the GWX versions for quite some time now. Because I never really hunt around England I guess I have never been exposed to MINES. But my assigned patrol grid of AN55 forced me to prowl the English coast. I always report to my assigned patrol grid, keeps the Gestapo off my back. Anyways after an uneventfull 24hrs I noticed most of the traffic moving south along the coast between Hartepool and Hull. So I ordered full ahead and time compressed SSW for a closer look. When I arrived at my spot, not sure where ![]() AN5545 to AN5822 ish, I popped outside my boat for a peek around and low and behold... see how close death looms... ![]() Needless to say, heart failure... ![]() My first mine encounter, I havent ever seen one before except in Episodes of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" and a recent reviewing of "Hot Fuzz". I have seen many posts regarding deaths and location etc. but never really worried about this threat before. ![]() ![]() Thank god I always... SAVE FIRST! So I guess ALMOST counts for Sea Mines as well as Horseshoes and Handgrenades!!

In a vast ocean... you came within yards of death.
of course if you didnt have external camera on, you would have never known anything about it and..... KABOOM!!!

Aye GR.
I think I will never ever disable the external... ![]() Right full rudder would have ended yet another career before 45.

Once lost a boat near Darwin, Australia. Don't have external camera then, or now. Wonder if external camera could have save that boat.
![]() Glad you make it pass, mark the location and report it to BdU. |

I have external cam on, but I'll never see them anyway, because I have the water density set for 2.:rotfl:

As an eye-candy fan, external camera is never disabled. I enjoy watching the fish hit the targets.
Haven't run across a mine either, I avoid the shallow waters around England, but hunt off Ireland frequently, occasionally venturing into the shallows to chase down a sonar contact. How close do you have to get to a mine for it to explode, or is it a case that you have to touch it? |

Hi,
You have to hit one of the horns on a buoyant mine, although they can be magnetic. In shallow waters the ground mine is the one to avoid, magnetic or acoustic, or, later on, pressure. You really should not have to worry about these since they are not laid over 20 fathoms and a prudent skipper would not be in shallow water, buoyant however, could be laid down as deep as 100 fathoms, with the mines set to about periscope depth. They were barriers to discourage skippers from going into areas frequently used by surface ships. Incidentally, buoyant mines could have a thin line attached to a horn at one end and a small float on the other, which would drift on the surface, almost invisible, to snag the unwary passer by. RR |

has anyone ever seen a mine hit thier boat?
because i think the mine does not explode. it vibrates fast against u boats hull, causing damage and then yoou sink. |

I don't have external view enabled, but I *HAVE* seen them in my periscope.
When raising the scope one time to check whether a sound contact was within visual range, I happened to see a mine just off the port bow. I almost dropped a load in my lederhosen. Luckily, I could see we would pass by it, so I didn't order a course change because I didn't want my stern to smack into it.

If you struck a mine, I would guess theres no survivng. Since you lived maybe it was just a glitch. If machine guns from merchants can lay down some serious damage, I am thinking a mine should be insta-death. This thread is pretty informative... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...ighlight=mines

I was very lucky as I survived a mine hit once. It was in Loch Ewe, I was going in for a surprize raid on the port and I was more worried about ASW boats than I was mines, and next thing I know I heard a loud bang and though crap I just got depth charged and next thing I know I'm sunking to the bottom of a shallow channel. I checked the outside view and see that I'm sitting in a minefield with a patrol boat puttering less than a thousand meters away. But after some every intense hours the boat was fixed and I still got a tanker and light cruiser that where behind an anti-sub net (how I got the shots was I set the depth of the torpedos to zero so they would go over the net.) So if I had not been in shallow water I would have been toast!

I've had really good careers end that way, usually late war ones where I'm always at periscope depth, on batteries or schnorkel. It's completely realistic, but annoying just the same, especially if you play DiD.
