Serious question here: Is the Captain's command career over?

I am not a Navy guy, but it is my understanding that the Navy has little sympathy when one of their ships stops floating and becomes stuck. It is also my understanding that the Navy pretty much has the attitude that the Captain is responsible when ever anything goes wrong.

Is my understanding correct?

Can there be any mitigating circumstances in this situation where the Captain could retain command (Either this ship or another ship)?

Or is this Captain gonna be commanding the smallest desk the Navy has?

Not as bad as the RN ship that hit Tower Bridge cos her Captain was pissed.

I even knew the girls whose dad it was.

Probably over. The Captain is the absolute law aboard his ship. The downside of that is he is also answerable for everything that happens. Mitigating circumstances? When the USS Frank E. Evans was rammed and sunk by HMAS Melbourne, her skipper was asleep in his bunk. He was exonerated at his court-martial, but never commanded a ship again.

Of course the captain of Melbourne suffered a similar fate. It's the navy way.
