Earlier in my current career I sunk the Nelson in grid BF 25 in Feb '40. Can't add much to what bigboywooly said. The north/south convoy route to the Med (check your convoy route map) is a good place to try and get lucky.

I've found the biggest taskforces in the Med, mostly north or east of Malta, trouble is, there lots and lots of planes there too

That's also a nice place to actually report convoys in to BdU as well, as your airbases are pretty close and you have a chance at seeing one of the rare Axis air attacks.

I remember I did this once and was completely confused when I saw (cheated and used external view ) an airstrike on a convoy I had reported. I didn't know what the Italian airforce roundels looked like.

Closest I've come to a heavy group was a Cruiser (Sheffield class? Couldn't tell at range) leading 5-6 destroyers cruising eastward out of the mouth Firth of Forth, right past a coal freighter I sunk an hour or two previous. Were they looking for me or just passing through? Needless to say I didn't stay to find out.

What do you mean by "Core"?

Probably vanilla/stock.

Hang about near Scapa or the entrance to the Med for the best possibility.
