Default AOD features missed in SH series

I was near the bottom in 80m's of water slowly slipping past the escorts when memmorys of that ancient sim came back to me. I miss the abillity to sit on the bottom making asdic far less effective while making repairs. I also miss the dreaded mud that once you were repaired and had stopped all the flooding and pumped all the water out of the boat you may or may not break free of that damn mud. Many of times ive used up almost all my compressed air blowing ballast tanks just to finally pull free and many times ive used it all up only to be stuck on the bottom using up my last few precious minutes of air.

So what do you miss?

What you said plus many other things....

1.- No humming bird abilities for U-Boats: Go forward or sink

2.- Amazing AI: A plane that catches you on surface but is well attacked by your AA crew will stay outside of AA range and call more airplanes. If you try to dive (Unmanning the AAs) he will attack you.

3.- The atmosphere thanks to the interaction with BdU and the wolfpacks

4.- The Night club

5.- The realistic weather patters. The Atlantic in winter is a hard sea, not a continuous storm or a peaceful lake or an alternation of both

6.- The simplicity and cleanness of the program, as well as the fast loading times

7.- The AOD crew: Yes they were 2D in pop up windows, but their credibility was way ahead of SH3 cyborgs. For me they still ruin the experience, but in SH4 they are a different story, much improved and less disturbing.

....and so much more.

There are however other things I don't miss at all, and where SH3 is far superior (Not necessarily graphics and sound) for example: The detailed TDC, having two scopes with realistic characteristics, etc.

For me the major things I miss:

1. When a D/C explodes I miss the "window" of time when the sonar is deaf so the sub can get a headstart. (1-3 minutes?)

2. Wolfpacks for sure.

3. Visibility that can range from 50 meters to clear in 1 meter intervals instead of "fixed" ranges.

4. Better AI? I have a small belief that the AI in SH-3 cheats a little.

5. The AI should use directional sonar cone instead of what is in SH-3.

Yes, a very nice features.

the most important feature is the gauge with the level of the water in the bilge. you can stop the pumps. but the water starts to raise and with the time the boat sink, unless that you use compressed air or start the pumps again, ( more noise).

And the real random weather with sometimes heavy fog and NO rain.

I just re-read the manual and I dont remeber or find anything regarding bilge pump meters.

Anybody know what song was played as you left port? Would be cool to have that in SHIII!

I liked the screen shake when you were being depth-charged.

I remember there were a lot of people who missed having the band on the quay to play you out to sea in SH2. You basically lived in a deserted world in SH2. Even the ports were empty except for the dock and bunkers. Happily, the developers thought to include bands (and people)in SH3.

Weather has already been mentioned, but worth repeating; it is so much more realistic in AOTD.

The compass is much easier to read and you can set your course with precision. The victory flags flying when you return from patrol were fun. "Now running on diesel engines" was good to hear when you surfaced after you had been running low on oxygen and/or batteries.

Default AOD

I really miss sailing back into port showing off all my bunting! Those little flags with the ship tonnages on them-I seem to recall a broom one one occasion (shades of Martzen Tromp) after "sweeping the seas".

I WANT A BROOM!
