What Tubes do you use?
Title should say it all. Do you use the Forward or Aft Torpedo tubes when you send all expense paid trips to the drink? Personally I have started to use the aft tubes more becuase then once I hit my target I don't need to turn, just go forward. I decided to start trying that because on my last patrol I used all of my Forward tubes too fast becuase I felt like I had so many fishes. Since Aft seems to work well, I don't see a change coming soon.

Depends on how many fish I've got left. Generally I'll try and keep more in the bow than the stern so I've started using the aft tubes in the Cod when my fore torps reach about half a magezine to go. Of course I know a few skippers here use the end around technique to line up their stern shots when they empty their forward tubes.

Depending on my initial approach, forward or aft first. I'll then try and alternate to keep as much of a balanced load as possible. More often than not my first approach would be to use the forward tubes and if the situation warrants go to ahead flank and swing around to bring the aft tubes to bear.

After the war sub skippers pretty much agreed that subs would have been just as well off with no stern tubes. So that shows that most of them weren't thinking ahead either, just taking the cream off the top with firing the forward torpedoes until all they had left was those $%#$ aft ones that were harder to shoot.
So you're doing it just like I do. I'm always looking for an excuse to use the aft torpedo tubes. It makes you a hero in the after torpedo room because every torp fired means another bunk or two. And it's just plain fun to do. If you're going to run out of one torpedo room first, make it the after torpedo room and then you'll look forward to the shots at the end of the cruise instead of dreading them.

forward tubes first, then aft while loading forward tubes.

I use them all. I especially use Aft tubes when luring DEs. Align on 180 and maintain that attitude until the DE is within about 400 yds. Otherwise, I use all as necessary according to my attitude to the target.

I'll use the aft tubes for harbour attacks and other easy kills and save my forward tubes for convoy attacks and large warships.

I try to set up a stern shot on single ships whenever I can. Get ahead of the ship cross its course and lie in wait. Up scope and fire the stern tubes. I save the forward tubes in case I run into a convoy.

I try to keep a balance of fore and aft, but actually prefer to use aft tubes if I can get my boat into position. Attacking from aft helps me slip away if merchants are escorted, or finish them off quickly with my deck gun.
If I have to attack an escorted convoy using Forward Tubes, I immediatley set my aft torps to high speed at shallow depth. As soon as I launch the forward tubes, I turn in the direction the convoy was heading and evaluate the intentions of the closest escort. If he even looks at me crosseyed, I launch decoys so he comes running, and then send an aft torpedo to greet him. ![]() My favorite tactic is to place my sub directly in the path of a large convoy, and then pop up to periscope depth when they are right over the top of me. I use both fore and aft tubes simultaneously - engaging 10 targets and running for the thermal layer. This places most of my targets with 2,000 yards without much room to move. The remnants of the convoy inhibit the escorts ability as well. Just make sure one of your targets doesn't start sinking on top of you. Nearly got sunk when a tanker collided with my boat on its way down.

i like to take on convoys or task forces head on so i am in and out quickly. for this reason i mostly use forward tubes for all targets and save the aft tubes for defense against a DD or used to finish off a ship i passed without believing its sinking.
