Default GeForce 8400 GS 512mb version

Does anyone have this video card? My processor is 3ghz and have 2 gigs of RAM. I had the GeForce 8400 GS 256mb version and it died on me. Funny thing is the 256 version seemed to work better than the 512 version. Oh does anyone know how or if it is possible to disable the Shared System Memory as shown below:

Total Available Graphics Memory: 1279MB
Dedicated Video Memory: 512MB
System Video Memory: 0MB
Shared System Memory: 767MB

This is the video card information from my card. Would 512MB work for Silent Hunter 4 because with the settings now it is dragging. Anyone info would be helpful and thanks in advance.

Most likely your problem for a dragging SH4 is the 8400 GS, as it is designed for HTPC use and not gaming. Get rid of it if you can, and look for a replacement. What to look for I wouldn't know atm moment, I have very little idea on what's "hot" now.

There is a nice 9800GT card at TigerDirect for $99 and it has your name on it. It will be four or five times faster than your present card, if it were working.

I should have mentioned that the GeForce 8400 256mb verison I had worked great for a year or so until it died.

One thing to consider before buying this card. I was looking at new cards a couple of weeks ago and was considering either the 9600 or the 9800. As RR says, good card great price, but luckily, before I made the purchase, I discovered they need more voltage and my power supply would not handle them . So I guess I'm stuck with what I'm using until I can get a new rig.

Hello to one and all. I want to thank everyone for their ideas. I did find the main reason why it had such a hard time working. It was my power supply. Never thought of that being the problem. Picked up a 600 watt power supply and and an ATI 512mb card. Works great now. Catch ya later.

Which card, Punkmaster? We've muddied the waters mentioning a bunch of different cards. If you have the 8400 why don't you trade parameters with him and see if you can get him squared away?

Well, you may not know much about computers but you've come up with the first successful report that I know of where someone successfully made a shared memory graphics card run SH4. That's outstanding.

I personally buy the 9600 GT it has a 50 MHz higher core clock speed than the 9800.. It may not sound like much, but believe me it helps....

What I've seen makes me believe that the 9600GT is almost exactly the same speed as an 8600GT, which is almost exactly the same speed as my 7600GT, the absolute minimum graphics card I'd recommend for the game. The 8800/9800 should be several times faster. My 24 fps in external view free camera looking at the submarine is over 100 fps with an 8800 or 9800.
