Bird watching contest - name this bird

Well, not really a contest, but it may be fun. I've been setting up feeders in my back yard, which resembles a zoopark. I am seeing more and more birds of a wide variety. I'm not really an avid birdwatcher, and I'm quite ignorant of species (that's a black bird, that's a blue bird, that's a cardinal--that's about it for me ). So, what about if I post a pic and you guess/research/ID the bird. There could be a prize or two. Be sure to cite your source. If you agree with someone's answer, feel free to second it with your proof

Bird #1 American Gold Finch

PS: I cannot answer for the quality of the photography, I'm no Horsa and most of the pics are taken through a window

Gold Finch (lesser)

http://www.myphotoclub.com/storage/u...ld%20finch.jpg

Definitely the finch family and probably this one that is indigenous to TX

Excellent thread.

That is a male American Gold Finch in it's winter colours.

They look better in summer, but you won't see them in Texas in summer.

They are sometimes called "wild canaries".

I never knew they change colors like that, I'm use to the summer colors. Interesting.

Wow, you guys are good. American Gold Finch it is, nicely done. Wild canaries, yeah, that's exactly the impression I got when I saw him, he looked a little exotic for a songbird. This could be fun, plus it gives us a chance to stop arguing about politics for a while.

Bird #2

I would say a Junco but the red beak is throwing me off. Also, beak shape says it is a finch. Almost looks like the common house finch.
