Default Crew Management = Pale Faces

I searched the postings to see if this was asked before, but I did not find it so I guess I need to ask. Regarding Crew Management, what does it mean when some of the faces of the crew are paled out - in pink or gray? I’ve checked to see if they are less efficient or perhaps wounded or distressed, but that doesn’t seem to be the case as compared to other crew members who are not paled out. What does it mean if the crew member’s face is paled out?

Pink(or Red) means wounded. Gray means off duty or if you prefer not on watch.

If you click on the crewman, you should be able to see his health statisics. Been awhile since I lost a crewman, but if my memory serves me, they have a red x over them when they die.
