Is SH3 superior to SH4 in your opinion?

I can't help it but I had to start thread like this. Most of you will probably consider this just a random, drunk rant (well, I have been drinking whiskey while fixing tomorrow's Christmas dinner ) but here is my thought: I've been playing SHIII and SH4 (+UBM) for some time and there something just not 100% right about the SH4. I can't quite put my finger on it but SH4 is missing something. Something substantial to make me believe that I am really a Kaleun on u-boat in WW2.
Granted, SH4 has definitely better graphics and ship/sub models, great explosions and the sea looks so REAL that I feel I am gonna get seasick right in front of my monitor but otherwise is just not quite it.
For some reason the colors seem to be "washed out" and the whole thing just has very surreal feel to it. No matter how many MODs I download it just does not cut it for me. Why is that?

On the other hand SH3 feels REAL. Regardless less polygon models of crew, subs, ships not fancy explosions for some reason it is VERY believable. The colors, maps, crew outfits, the whole enviroment somehow just feels RIGHT.

Go figure.

If I had one Christmas wish (games related anyway) I'd wish there was a way how to implement SHIV sea, hi-polygon graphics and effects in SHIII engine and that would make the SHIII just the only u-boat simulator I would ever need.

Anyhow, it is 4:05 am December 24st here in Ohio so where, the heck, is GWX 3.0??? :rotfl:

Cheers (off to another Jack and Coke),
-L

IMHO, it boils down to the players geographical location.

Being a UK resident means that I have been schooled about WWII and therefore I have more of a vested interest/understanding in the Atlantic battles.

Likewise, US residents, have been schooled about their Pacific conflict. They will have a greater understanding of the units & people involved in that theatre.

Neither is more 'real' than the other, it's still a game. It only feels more 'real' based on the users historical preference.

Edit - Dowly, why are you still conscious? Glug, glug.......*hic*

I have concluded after unbiased reviewing both side's statements, that the answer is...Pizza!

Btw, did you intentionally pick a chaos knight from Warhammer for your sig or did you just think it was a cool pic? I'm just curious.

Back to OT. Imo, Sh4 isn't necessarily missing things that sh3 has, but it's missing a lot of stuff that GWX has. I know what you mean, though.
My biggest complaint would be lack of U-boats. It's still a fun game but it seems too easy for a subsim. The aircraft are way too easy to kill, way too plentiful and really really bad shots. The crew voices, while nice, are kind of repetitive and robotic after a while.

Somehow, despite the environment enhancements and graphics, it feels too much like a game. Not once have I had the urge to sit back on the con or in my bunk and read a little from a good book at 1x while enjoying the sounds of the ocean, and occasionally panning the camera to enjoy the view. I suspect that may be because I always studied the Battle of the Atlantic, though. It's a better-known theater, and perhaps that is what seems out of place?

Picked it as I play a Chaos Chosen on Warhammer Online, and besides, the Chaos guys are just so darn cool. :p

I like English muffins over bisquits. There is more knooks and crannys to hold the butter and jam.

I think it's the engine noises. The boats in Sh3 have this loud engine. You feel like you are flanking. SH4 boats are too quiet even at flank and on the bridge.

I think this is why people say they can't get into SH4 and they don't know why. I think the quiet engines have a subtle subconcious effect.

I prefer white mulled wine to the red one, but either goes if it's the only one served.

Almost as natural a choice as picking SH4 over SH3(I uninstalled SH3 months ago)
