How to complete a patrol? Help

Hey all...I just got this game today and it is outstanding...One quick problem I seem to be having is, For the puposes of promotions it still says I need to complete a patrol. Despite having done 4 patrols yesterday and ending them everyway I could think of I get no promotions for me or my crew. I get the renown, the medal to give out and in the logs it lists 4 patrols but no promotions. Please help my green crew get better.
