Default cruiser tactics

hello guys,
i just came across a big , BIG convoy with about 6 destroyers protecting a fleet of light cruisers and about 5 big heavy cruisers and 2 battle schips
so i went for it and destroyed the destroyers first (ok with the deck gun cheat ) (the rest of the config is stock ) or i woudend have a chanse .
then the light cruisers went down and i concentrated at the big boys :p
here the problem begon ,i fired at the heavy schips with deck gun butt no effect at all do i need to juse the explosive shells (no effect) ore the armor piercing shells (did not try those , i was to excited ) or c'ant you destroy the realy big schips with the deck gun ?
happy holidays boys
grtz

They have heavier armour than the smaller boats. I doubt the deck gun will do the job.

Your deck gun can't even penetrate destroyer armour, the cruisers would barely notice you....

When they do notice you, those 9" inch guns will rip you apart.. :P

I've started playing the standard patched game on realistic settings. I still have free cam because I'm a graphics whore and I am in love with watching ships explode! I've been fighting myself NOT to use it when evading escorts. Its hard to fight the urge but it makes them seem so much harder to shake that way, esp in the shallows.
I finally got a battleship kill in my new Gato since I've been playing on these settings. I stumbled across a task force coming up between The Celebes and Borneo. It had one line of three or four Fuso's and at least one line of heavy cruisers. They came to me so I sat my boat near the bottom and waited a bit off to the side. I made a dash in and fire my fore tubes off and dove and headed south. I got enough of a hit on the Fuso with two of the torps to slow her to 9 knots with a pretty nasty list. I missed and fuso with the rest but hit Mugami with one of my torps that I (luckly) forgot to set the depth on.
After the TF got far enough away I surfaced and looped out in front of the crippled ship, came in and killed it. When I went back to the Mugami she was pretty much dead in the water bow down and listing to the port. I didnt want to waste a torp so I tried to hit her underside with my deck gun. Even the keel which was exposed because of her bow being under water was immune to my deck gun. I don't know if I spent reknown on the larger deck gun or not, I'd have to check when I get home but either way even the belly of a cruiser (fore of her screws) cant be popped with a deck gun.
It makes sense but I was hoping for an Achilles heel... no luck with the deck gun.

The "belly" of a warship is usually heavily armored to protect against torpedoes. All your deck gun would do is cause a couple of dents in the armor.

I always thought the belt had all the armor and that the keel wasnt as armored which made torpedos such good weapons against warships. Either way it makes sense that a deck gun shouldn't be able to punch through.

The deck gun of a submarine is nothing more than decoration, only useful against fishing boats.

If I come across anything larger than that, I use torpedos and nothing else.

In reality, battling a cruiser with a submarines deck gun is suicide.

Well, you might be able to damage the cruisers by firing to the bridge or guns, but then again, the damage is minimal due to low armor penetration of the 3-4" guns. I think light cruisers had at least 5" on the belt and 3-6" on deck armor, heavier boys 7-9" on belt and deck, donno..

But anyhow, they wont fire back at you if you just keep your range, i think stock firing range is set to 4000m, so it is relatively easy to fire at them from afar... Bit too easy imo.

Wouldnt getting right close to him negate his main battery from firing at you (due to the minimal if any depression angles.)? Also if there wer any dds around and they shot at u, any mis would strike the cruiser. Also, would penetration of say a 4'' or 5'' deck gun be better with AP at close range?

Thanks and happy holidays!
