Woman Guilty of Minor Charges for MySpace Hoax

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 26 -- A Missouri woman who posed as a 16-year-old boy on MySpace.com to woo and then rebuff a troubled teenage girl who later committed suicide was found guilty Wednesday of three misdemeanor charges, but no felonies, by a federal jury.
EDIT: Ow, and the judge is an arse too.

A 13 year old shouldn't be on myspace imho, especially an obviously emotionally unstable 13 year old who can't take the insult slinging world of the internets.

I'm probably just scarred by the place though, after playing games like Eve Online, WoW, other mmos and forums, you don't really get offended by things people type. (Or say in the case of teamspeak and ventrillo)

Stupid broad, that's for sure. But you can't hardly blame all of it on her. The people who should be punished in this case are the kids' parents. If you have a 13-year old with emotional issues and you don't know about it and also let the kid freely roam the internet without overseeing her you have a SERIOUS parenting issue.

I think you're being way too harsh on the parents here... Emotional issues aren't always the parents fault. Such things are just as likely to be caused by bullying or teasing at school and not fitting in. Some kids tend to close off from their parents, telling them everything is fine or just go quiet, and parents can do little to reach their kids this way. Every situation is different and complex. There's been plenty of suicide cases that just came out of the blue, where not even the parents suspected anything.

Whoa there, no one should have to take insult slinging and it shouldn't be expected.

The woman who did this is emotionally unstable. Granted I don't think myspace or bebo are a place for 13 year olds. Frankly I think sites like that are sad anyway.

Thing is what kind of person wakes up and decides "let's pretend to be thirteen and upset them..."?

You don't need cyberspace to terrorize somebody.
I've just seen a perfect example of something similar in RL, only it did not yet lead to any injuries.
Just giving (unprofessional) legal advice to people I know has convinced me never to do anything with criminal law...
Just too depressing.

The thing is, most people like her distance themselves from the other person behind that screen, Why get offended by someone a thousand miles away?
