Default Mediterranean Waters

Starting patrol at Mediterranean I’ve set water transparency to 7 via SH Commander according SHC hunts. Now I have the question to more experienced skippers, if the transparency has any effect upon my Boot detection both from plans and from ships? In the nature it really has, but it works in SH nature?

No SHIII aircraft do not detect you once you are below the surface, as long as you are not making a wake on the surface.

Be careful as they may have detected you before you submerge and may still be able to drop bombs on you which will hurt even at PD.

If you are playing GWX2.1, in later war there are aircraft that drop depth charges as well as bombs.

7 seems kind of low to me. I set water transparency to 18-19 (20=transparent) in the Mediteranean. This is because I read somewhere (can't remember exactly where now) that those waters were much more transparent than in the Altantic.

No, the transparency setting has no effect other than graphical.

Watch those aircraft in the Med! I got cocky after 4 patrols and no sign of any enemy activity except lone merchant ships. 5th patrol, got bounced at dusk and that was all she wrote.

I wouldn't run at anything more than 256x near Malta (128x or less if you're really close). It's really busy (air activity) in that area...

Compared to the Atlantic the Mediterranean is a pond. The Planes can easily span the shores!

Sure some books indicate that on good day and the right light a U-Boot could've been seen as a shadow at till a depth of 30-50m:hmm:

I was at 256x about 200 miles N of Tobruk in June '42. We had been submerged all day and had just surfaced around 1950hrs. Never had any warning, just 'we're taking damage sir!'. We crash dived, but had taken took much water and damage and went straight to the bottom.

I think we must be patient. I especially chose La Specia Base in order to try something special, I mean big warships. In my 1st patrol in Med. on the 7 December 1941 I faced task force – 3 destroyers going eastwards. After alarmtauchen hydrophone detected 5 warships, I hope the task force consisted not only from destroyers, but heavier battleships too. Unfortunately they were going to fast and my inquiry failed.
By the way, does anybody know where aircraft carriers sail in GWX Med? Historically the sea was infested by British battleships.

That's rough. I always use the observation periscope to have a look around before surfacing. 1950 hrs in June would be close to sunset (if I'm not mistaken) so you may want to wait another hour or two before coming up. Dawn & sunset are really dangerous times. Planes will often attack out of the sun so your watch crew can't spot them until it's too late. When you do surface, run your diesels at Full or Flank speed to recharge your batteries as quickly as possible. Once they're fully recharged you can drop down to 1/3.

You could also consider just lying stopped on the surface and watch the batteries charge up anyway
