Default S-Boat Technical

Been scouring the web for an hour now to no avail. 3 Questions:

1.Anyone have any idea what this is:

2. What is this (sonar?).....

3. ...and why is the whole structure rotating? See the stays are at a 45 deg angle to the deck, from the deck up the whole thing rotates, as far as I can see only the 'wing' of the antenna below the ball fairing should rotate?

Image shack will not show your pic to me. Try Photobucket. Much easier than Image Shack.

The whole structure for the sonar head turns in the game because the game will only allow all or nothing to move. Just a guess here but I sure that is the answer.

Ok trying again:

Question 1

Question 2

You know the 3rd. Thanks AVGWarhawk. Unless I'm very mistaken though I have seen only the antenne rotate before, many mod configs ago. As I've said I may have been mistaken (late night the Capt needs just one more whiskey)

Concerning question #1: To me it looks a little bit like an extra anchor....:hmm:

#1 Could be a Y-tube sonar. Have a look at Norman Friedman's book: US Submarines through 1945. You may also find more info on www.navsource.org under the S-boats section.

#2 Is probably an early JK passive sonar. See the navsource website on the S-44

groetjes,

Cheers

Default Sonar!

The first picture shows the three rubber transducer "rats" for the Y-tube sonar. This was a standard pre-war sonar outfit on the S-boats. The second "photo" shows the spherical JK sonar transducer. This was a later war-time upgrade of the S-boat sonar systems.

For more info on the S-boats, try this link:

Part three of the S-boats article should be posted soon.

Correct. It's a goal of mine to separate the object so only the upper half rotates.

But in the stock game this sonar doesn't rotate... and from a distance you can't really tell if the head rotates or not. Now if you really want it to rotate you have to break the object indeed.

I know. I "animated" it for RFB, even knowing about the side-effect of the whole object rotating.

I prefer it this way round. Only the braces give it away. How about making the braces separate from the antenna and vertical pole? ie Two seperate entities. Yuo wouldn't notice the pole rotating.

Separate was correct.
