To mod or not to mod, that is the question

Sorry for the corny title! I keep seeing references to mods and what a difference they can make, and I am curious to try, but somewhat put off as I tried a couple in the dim and distant past and found I was getting CTD's, the end result being I had to start again from scratch, and didn't have the courage to try any more.

So, what will I need - I have the setup for SH3Commander 2.6 and JSGME from when I first tried in early 2007 - would they need updating ? And are you going to tell me that I have to install those BEFORE I install the GWX update ( in which case I will wait for GWX3), or, horrors, will you tell me I have to start right back in vanilla mode and will not be able to use my current profile even if I start back in base??

If I were to get to the place where I could have some mods, could I ask what mods 'work' for you? I ask because I seem to recall that Light Harbor (?) would bring up a problem with simdata.dll for me. The only other mod I have tried, and which worked, was to have Das Boot music. I would like to put that back on, and if there were any mods that gave some increased traffic so I wouldn't have to spend months darning Bernard's smelly socks while waiting for a sighting - that would be good!

I have quite a good spec machine and GWX 2.1 running

I'd say the GWX 2.1 patch would be a good place to start. Several fixes and several more optional mods that you can activate... Can't recall any of the fixes/mods off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure someone around here can. :p

You can get the latest & last version of SH3 Commander here: http://hosted.filefront.com/Wolfehunter/2238729. There were several changes & improvements made to the last version (Ie. the "Start at Sea" option). JSGME has been updated too. Unfortunately I'm not really sure if you can install them before you install the GWX 2.1 update & I don't want to give you any bad advice.

OLCE2 has worked wonders for me. It got rid of that awful flickering sun & moon that really bugged me. Torpedo damage final is a must have (if you don't have it already). It's available here: http://hosted.filefront.com/OceanBlue. Works with both stock & GWX.

Hope this helps a bit...

I was so desperate about so many CTD since I use GWX and SH3Com that I have deleted ALL(includiong some precious gramophone songs unsaved...) and reinstall the original version of SH3...

I just include the Fubar boats and some little others updates. The result is clear: only 65 seconds to enter in the game(12 minutes with GWX !) and never more CTD !

But believe me: I still sad...

ahh, right - thank you Pinguin and Murr

Chisum, it is sad that you cannot run GWX. Wonder why - but 12 minutes load-time would be a bit of a put-off.

1) Patch SHII to 1.3
2) Install the latest SH3 Commander and use it to run the game

3a) Run the "roll-back" option on SH3Comm. (I think it is automatic now anyway).
4a) Download and install GWX2.0 and then the 2.1 patch
5a) Enjoy

3b) Wait till GWX 3 is released and install it.

GWX 2.1 is 99% crash free for 90+% or people.

I don't understand what you mean.

In my case, I can run GWX correctly, sunk single merchants and run all over the world without any problem.

But when I meet a convoy, if I sunk a tankers or a cargo carried on some munitions and blow up in an enormous yellow flamme, I have everytime a CTD.

Finally I'm a kaleun who can't fight against convoy and if it's secure, it's not the top.

Really hope that GWX 3.0 will be full ok for me but you can understand that I'm very suspicious...

I'll wait till I finish a career in GWX 2.1 before upgrading to GWX 3.0! I have yet to do that!

My advice, Wolfette, is to use JSGME to enable mods one at a time. If one causes a crash, it's easy enough to just disable it. No problems, no worries.

Are you using GWX Enhanced Damage (or whatever it's called)? If your video card isn't the best that can cause CTDs all the time. I had to stop using it.

No I don't.
And my GC is not a top GC: ATI RADEON X1950 Pro.
That reduces seriously my choice but it's a new card buy just one year ago...

Note that I still enjoy to play with the original SH3. Actually in my second patrol and waitting for a big convoy to watch if the problem still remain.

Ditto - I will use any mod that will work and SS's advise saved me a lot of grief.
