Turns out George Carlin who recently passed away was.....

The first host on Saturday Night Live.

Yes, they had a special honouring him the weekend after he died IIRC.

EDIT: Actually I think they just rebroadcast that first episode, still rather interesting.

Not trivia to me. In fact I watched that very first episode precisely because of the commercial they did featuring him advertising it. He was sitting in front of a chessboard and spoke very seriously about the new show coming up, while a man on a tall ladder was fixing lightbulbs in the background. Then the man fell off the ladder. Carlin acted like nothing had happened. Turns out it was Chevy Chase on the ladder.

I first saw Carlin when he was a regular guest on The Flip Wilson Show. He did some funny stuff there, too.
