Default Hi there - Reinstalling SH3 and some mod suggestions

Hi there,

I'm new to the forum and I've been a long time fan of Silent Hunter III (although have never successfully taken on a convoy before, heh, let alone sink much). I've decided to reinstall the game and I'm interested in installing one of the mods to help make gameplay more historical and interesting.

From what I've been seeing on the forums, the Grey Wolves (GWX?) seems to be the most popular choice of mod. However, I've heard people mention a couple of other mods out there which are supposedly good also.

So, for a first time reinstaller like me whom wants a tough yet historical experiance, which mod would be the best to go for? I've heard something about a mod called Sea Wolves having spyware on or something so I take it that's a mod to avoid?

Also, with the mods, do you get to visit the Meditteranean and do missions in that part of the world? Or is it pretty much limited still to the North Atlantic? Forgive me, I never got that far before so if you could reach the Med in the vanilla version, I never got that far.

And lastly, although this should be reserved for the SHIV forums but I'll ask it here anyway, is there any primary type of popular mod for SHIV such as Grey Wolves for SHIII?

Thanks and I hope to get back to actually sinking some convoys. (Well try too, heh)

Welcome to subsim, Ksim3000.

There are many pros and cons to the supermods, most of which are discussed on this thread: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=143712

Personally I'm a GWX man as I believe it has the best combination of realism and gameplay. It's difficult enough to be challenging without getting frustrating but I recommend that you get a few patrols under your belt in vanilla before you go to a supermod. Just ensure that you are patched to the latest version (1.4b) - you can get this from ubi.com

With GWX you get to visit the Med and even the Far East. The GWX team have also announced that they are working on GWX 4 for SH4 but they're running silent and deep until nearer the release date.

Welcome aboard, Ksim3000, I'll echo Wreford-Brown and recommend GWX as well. I think a lot of other people would too. It's a fantastic mod that brings greater realism and depth into an already great game!

Hi guys,

Thanks for the recommendation! I've had a look through the thread and from what it seems, I'm split between GWX and WAC. What are the big differences between both mods? From what I've gathered, WAC seems to be more historically focused with events ranging from Fall Weiss to Barbarossa, etc. Does GWX include such events or is it more naval focused events that mod concentrates on?

But yeah, I'm warming up to GWX. Players have said you can add other mods to it. So how would you do that? Does that mean I could say play GWX but add in the events from WAC? I must admit, I am interested in keeping up with an historical based gameplay. Just adds that extra touch.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm sure I'll sail in here fine.

I might not know the answers to all your questions about GWX or WAC, but here is a link to a comparison thread:
http://subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=143712

They discuss GWX, WAC and NYGM and the differences.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but you may be able to use WAC combined with GWX.

You install GWX and all other mods with a program by JScones, JSGME 3.1 is the latest version. It's a mod enabler that goes with SH3 and it works wonders for installing and uninstalling mods.

Thanks SWCowboy. I'll be sure to check that link out and hopefully it should be able to help me with any installation queries. Much appreciated.
