Weekend Alone

Morning all,

I want to thank all of you who chimed in on the thread regarding the fact that I had the evening, all evening to play Silent Hunter as the wife was going to be gone.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=143455

You are not going to believe how I spent my night playing SIlent Hunter 3....

To quote that great public speaker Maxwell Smart...Would you believe playing Silent Hunter 4!

My boss got transferred and as a going away gift he gave me the game.

I have been curious about it so I loaded, and played for awhile, and these are my observations....

First of all let me say that I have a rig that can more then handle this game, I DL the patch, restarted defragged and compressed.

It loads much faster but it is the stock game not modded.

I couldnt get past the graphics, they are good, but look cartoonish, or like they were drawn in pastels and water colors, not the detail that we're used too.

I find it interesting that the first mod released for the game is Uboat missions,

The commands are the same, but it just seems overall weak, the graphics are weak, it stutters and spurts,

Most importantly, I will remain an avid SH3 fan, and as a distraction every now and again, I may load up 4

While I'm glad that you have both games , I agree that sh4 is cartoonish and have posted that myself many times.

If it wasn't for the hard work of our many great modders, both big and small mods, I would have made it a drink coaster long ago.

I do believe tho that SH4 with alot of work will be the best subsim yet.

I hope. :hmm:

p.s. Glad to hear you had a fun weekend . Sometimes it's nice to be alone and do what you want.

Really? My computer will barely run SH4, but with WClear's Evironment mod installed and all graphics enhancements turned off it looks like this:

As opposed to the same shot from SH3:

Others get even more impressive graphics with enhancements on.

I still play SH3 because I can't live without GWX and Commander, as well as several other mods that haven't been replicated in SH4. That, and the 7 fps lag. But as time goes on I'm looking forward to the change.

I have the stock SH3 patched to 1.4, then GWX 2.1 and quite a few mods.

Nice....you'll probably be interested in the GWX3.0 Gold release in December then

I think that after SH4 is three year old and with the same amount of modding effort put into it that SH3 has enjoyed, it will look pretty impressive.

I actually installed the environmental mods, and yes the sky and water look better, but again, I can't explain it but the ships and the whole game doesnt have a solid feel to it. Make sense? Its like almost everything is transparent, somewhat softer, not as solid and not as much there as SH3,

Again water coloring, pastelish, drawn with colored pencil kind of feel.

Nothing against anyone, and am sure its great, but as you say, I'll wait for the mods to catch up to it, and in the mean time wait for GWX3 it'll be my Christmas gift!

There was a terrible accident........

During a rather exciting but nerve racking episode, I was evading a DD and crashed dived, depth charges exploding close by, water spraying everywhere from the pounding we were taking, during all of this the lights in the office were off to help with the immersion and the pee cup was next to the cup with my ale, well you know what could have happened?

It did.

But at least we survived!

Funny thing....I guess I should have brushed my teeth before kissing my wife when she arrived home the following morning!:rotfl:
