[Fixed] GWX 2.1 Help Info Missing
[This problem is sorted. See post #13 for solution]
Well, it's happened again. After rebuilding my PC with a new SSD (WOW GWX loads fast now!), I have set about the arduous task of setting up and configuring my SH3+GWX+Mods install. Ten hours (or something like that) later, I have fired it up and got it running again. First, a huge thanks to all the great posters around here that have provided me with so much helpful knowledge and awesome mods. Now, on to the problem: I've screwed up part of my GWX install, and a reinstall doesn't fix it. The details: My problem is that pressing F1 brings up a help screen with the usual pages, but all but the first two are blank! I know I screwed it up with my mod selection, some of them custom. So, here are my installed mods:
Thanks for the help, especially the nHancer tips! Last edited by Commander Gizmo; 11-06-08 at 11:42 PM. Reason: Problem Sorted |

?
SH3CMDR is not a mod and should not be activated via JSGME. In the future, I suggest you load a fresh install of SHIII GWX3.0 gold on a disc or elsewhere on your hard drive so you will have all the files if you just need one, or an easy install of the game. I also back up my mod folder for the JSGME after I get the mods I want installed into it. I am not sure what files you need for the help file.

Deactivate all the mods in Jsgme that did not come with GWX.
Check to see if fault has been eradicated. If it has, add one third party mod at a time whist checking for problem returning. If it doesn't you have a corrupted install/file. Precisely which help file are you after :hmm: |

The help that is missing is the custom pages added by GWX such as uboat diving info and such.
I was actually posting out of laziness. You see, I just got everything set up and didn't want to do another grueling stint of activating mods and loading to see what is fixed. I figured someone else would likely have had the same problem since it seems most of those mods are in common use together right now. I have confirmed that it works fine with all mods off, and none of my custom mods deal with any files related to those pages that I am aware of. I most certainly do not load SH3 commander with JSGME, but it does modifiy files (thus it is a mod), and I thought could possibly effect the situation. I usually do keep a backup copy of the SH3 GWX fresh install, but I decided to get it all the way I want and back that up this time instead. I do keep all of my mods in a backup folder on another drive, but this time I tried out some new ones with GWX 2.1. Let it be known that I also did a complete reinstall of SH3+GWX+Mods to see if it corrected the problem. It did not, so it is one of the mods. Which file is the help data stored in? |

It should only take up to a dozen game loading operations. If it's of any help to you I would discount the GWX mods that came with the installation, the gramaphone music, LifeBoats&Debris_v3B, Torpedo damage Final ver2.0 and the Enable Original UMark tga. The rest should be trial and error until you find the offending file/mod. |

This is not really the place to be asking that question, but I'll answer it anyway. You probably did not download all of the cab files that go with the install, or havn't placed them all in the same folder as the exe. Back on topic... Can someone at least tell me what file has the help text in it so I can restore the GWX original? Thanks for the help! I search for it but Vista is incapable of properly searching the contents of files. Last edited by Commander Gizmo; 10-22-08 at 09:12 PM. |

The F1 help files are in the en_menu.txt BUT if the information is all there, then the menu1024_768.ini is to blame, as this controls what is displayed and where within the game.
You'll have to be careful when trying to replace this info. My advice is to compare the different versions of either the en_menu.txt & the menu1024_768.ini that you have in your MODS folder (you are using JSGME right?), you can easy compare these using WinMerge - http://www.winmerge.org/

Thanks for the info guys. I have searched for the given files in all of my mods and cannot locate any mod that uses them that is enabled. Further, the resupply info appears in both files. What about en_help.txt? this appears to have the actual data in it, though no mod enabled or otherwise seems to use that file either. Does SH3 Commander edit anything related to help?
Also, the integrated orders en_menu.txt exactly matches that of the en_menu.txt in my game folder. The menu1024_768.ini must be the issue then. The resupply section is there, but Enemies Of Germany and Uboats through Flotilla News II is missing. In game Enemies has the old page from stock and the rest after that are blank. I find no reference to en_help.txt in either file. Quote:

How does this reference the text in en_help.txt? That seems to be the problem to me. [EDIT: Added more info] Last edited by Commander Gizmo; 10-25-08 at 02:39 AM. |

I am bumping this because I am at a complete loss as to how the text is even referenced.

I have just performed a fresh install of SH3 and GWX 2.1. Launching via exe (not using Commander) and with no mods enabled, I still get this problem. I completely deleted all folders everywhere related to SH3.
![]() Note the page is 'Enemies of Germany' ![]() Note there is no help text displayed. You may download all files I am aware are related to displaying the help text here. If someone could run winmerge on them and tell me what is different, that would be great. The GWX install files I am using did not produce this problem in times past, so I believe them to be correct. Please advise how help text in en_help.txt is used by the game. This text appears to be correct, yet I am still getting the stock help data. Is this file even used? Your response is greatly appreciated. |

Ok, problem sorted.
![]() An extensive (and time consuming) search brougth up this thread, which referenced the same problem. After reviewing the issues I am experiencing, I came to the conclusion that Vista is at it again. I do not run any indexing, caching, or other file replication/caching services since I run solid state drives. Still, Vista found a way. For those who come after me, here is the problem and solution. Problem: Vista Sucks! Even though program compatibilty services and features are disabled, Vista chose to copy such files anyway. This causes Vista to reference the wrong set of files (Thanks Microsoft! You guys are genuises!) rather than the ones athat are actually in the file system at the location you have requested. That means that even though all your files look fine and you can see the correct data, Vista will return the old files and data when a program tries to access them. Solution: Delete the files. These can be found by browsing in explorer to the file location and clicking the "Compatibiliy Files" button on the toolbar. This button will only appear when Vista has gotten stupid and caused this issue. This forces Vista to read the real files that are actually where they are supposed to be. Don't know why I didn't notice the compatibility sooner. ![]() I would still like my previous questions about the way SH3 accesses en_help.txt to be answered. Someone must surley know.
