It's true he's not the media darling yet (nor Is Darling!). I imagine this is going to be a replay of Thatchers handling of the Falklands-a khaki election. Except some kind of pinstripe accountants election.
There is some criticism of his action though. He's insisting the newly refloated banks hand out cheap mortgages, which is what got us here in the first place.
We've all got to pay for it somehow and on that subject we have the bizarre situation where Brown has taken money off the taxpayer, given it to the banks and the banks are lending it to the taxpayer and charging interest on it, a lot of us are wondering why we don't cut out the middle man.
Also, and not too many have picked up on this, Brown used Anti Terrorism legislation to sieze the assets of Icelands Landissbankii (spelling soz) and I can't even imagine an Icelandic terrorist.
The answer is who knows if he called an election tommorow he might win. On the other hand when he's cut the NHS budget by half and continued to let the armed forces down then he'll be back where he was with knobs on.

I don't think Labour will win the next election. It is 9 months away at least and a lot can happen. As soon as people realise the taxes are going to go up they'll blame Labour even if it is the Tories putting them up.

To be perfectly honest I can't see how they can put taxes up any more, only cut spending.

Actually on that score I quite agree with what the UK govt. did.

The way the Icelandic govt. just turned around and said tough sh!t was just amazing.

Then again Iceland and the UK haven't really got on.

At the end of the day both sides negotiated on this.

The article in the Australian might be overstating the popularity of PM Gordon Brown a little.
